Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, doesn’t believe users get clinically addicted to the app, though he acknowledges some people struggle with using it in unhealthy ways.
In late January, TikTok, Meta, Snapchat, and Google were all named in a significant lawsuit concerning social media’s impact on users. The lawsuit was filed by a 19-year-old, identified only as ‘KGM,’ who claims the platforms’ addictive designs led to feelings of depression and suicidal thoughts.
Both TikTok and Snapchat resolved the lawsuit privately before it went to trial, but Meta chose to defend itself in court.
Instagram head Adam Mosseri recently acknowledged that some people misuse the platform, but he doesn’t think it causes actual addiction for anyone.
Instagram boss says some users can “feel good” after long usage
A Meta representative told the BBC that some people might be able to use the platform extensively without negative effects, and that any issues experienced are a matter of individual sensitivity.
Mosseri emphasized the need to distinguish between full-blown addiction and simply having trouble with a substance or behavior, during the hearing.
I’ve definitely mentioned being hooked on a Netflix show, like when I stayed up all night watching it. But I don’t think that’s the same as a real addiction that needs medical attention.

When questioned about KGM’s extensive Instagram use – including one instance lasting 16 hours – the head of Instagram described it as potentially problematic. He also repeatedly emphasized that he wasn’t qualified to comment on addiction, according to the BBC.
The legal battle is expected to continue, and Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of Facebook, is likely to testify in court sometime in February.
This isn’t the first lawsuit these platforms have faced. Back in 2024, Canadian schools filed a $4.5 billion suit, but that case focused on disruptions to learning, not issues with addiction.
