Kelsey Mann (Director), Mark Nielsen (Producer), Meg LeFauve and Dave Holstein (Writers), and Andrea Datzman (Composer) had a conversation with Clayton Davis, Senior Awards Editor at EbMaster, during the EbMaster FYC Screening organized by Disney & Pixar, where they discussed their contributions to “Inside Out 2.”
In the upcoming billion-dollar animated sequel “Inside Out 2”, we meet an older Riley, now aged 13, as she transitions to high school and encounters fresh emotions such as Anxiety (portrayed by Maya Hawke), Envy (Ayo Edebiri), Boredom (Adèle Exarchopoulos) and Embarrassment (Paul Walter Hauser). Director Mann was captivated by the universal nature of adolescence, commenting: “It’s something that everyone seems to have a grasp on.
To create “Inside Out 2,” Mann gathered a consultative team of girls aged between 13 and 16 years old. Their feedback was incorporated into every iteration of the movie. At first, Mann thought he might need to persuade Pixar to go along with it, but they were surprisingly receptive. For Mann, ensuring that today’s teenagers could look at the screen and say “they got it right” was crucial.
Nielsen had previously served as an associate producer for the 2015 film “Inside Out,” and he confessed that the fantastic experience from working on the initial project set extremely high standards for the sequel. “There was a lot of tension, but everyone shared it. Essentially, we channeled this apprehension into energy that drove us to improve the movie.
In the initial stages of development, LeFauve explained that the sequel started with Mann proposing the concept to the studio: “What if fear took control of Riley?” Since its premiere in June, the fresh emotions have been a hot topic among viewers; however, the writers initially needed to convince executive producer Pete Docter, the creator of the original “Inside Out,” that these new characters were absent in the first film.
LeFauve explained that Pixar emphasizes iterations. This means that a single story is developed on multiple layers. For instance, Riley’s storyline is one such layer, with its own set of rules and world. On top of this, there’s the headquarters level, followed by Joy’s story in the mind. Writing for such a complex narrative is like playing a game of three-dimensional chess.
By the close of the day, Holstein recognized that for “Inside Out 2” to thrive, it needed to embody a distinctly Pixar sensation. This was achieved primarily through the return of Joy, voiced once more by Amy Poehler, and a journey that doesn’t conclude with her departure but rather progression instead.
Holstein shared their thoughts on the unique aspect of the movie: “It’s interesting to contemplate what it might feel like to be replaced. Normally, Joy is the central character in these films, but perhaps that’s not always how things are in real life. What I find appealing about this film is its ability to entertain for approximately 70 minutes as a lively, comedic ‘Looney Tunes’-like adventure. However, suddenly towards the end, you understand, ‘Ah, it’s dealing with something quite profound.’
