In the realm of professional sports, momentum has been abundant for the Kansas City Chiefs during the last two years. This is aside from the fact that Taylor Swift was a guest at one of their games.
Following two back-to-back Super Bowl victories and an unexpected surge in public attention, the NFL franchise has been smartly leveraging this momentum, particularly for brand extension into the entertainment industry. Last week, they unveiled plans to produce a new digital series reminiscent of classic buddy comedies as a follow-up to their 2024 Hallmark original movie.
Actor Christopher Meloni, known for “Law & Order: SVU”, along with comedians Pete Holmes and Holly Robinson Peete, will feature in a series titled “The Magic Number” which is set to premiere on the YouTube channel of the NFL’s most subscribed team, the Kansas City Chiefs, starting January 14. The show will have Jason Sudeikis, a native of Kansas and avid Chiefs fan, as the narrator. Interestingly, Holly Robinson Peete’s father-in-law, Willie Peete, secured his first assistant coaching position in the league with the Chiefs back in 1984.
Lara Krug, the marketing chief for the team, informs EbMaster that their most recent original creation is a part of their strategy to act as “storytellers” to cater to their devoted fanbase, with the team once more bound for the playoffs.
Last year, we kicked off with our playoff run during the previous season, along with the Hallmark movie ‘Touchdown: A Chief’s Love Story.’ We’re thankful to find ourselves back in the playoffs again,” said Krug. “We strive to incorporate what’s currently trending. Our motto this year is about creating magic, and this series certainly fits that bill.
Holmes and Robinson Peete act as two companions seeking a third to finish off their ultimate fan collection. Various appearances pop up, with Meloni given a substantial role.
According to Krug, there was no prior connection between us and him. This project he’s involved in is unlike anything we’ve done before. Remarkably, he adjusted his schedule, and we managed to collaborate with him in New York. It’s a fantastic illustration of how enthusiastic fans, even celebrities, crave interaction with our club. Particularly when it’s not just the same repetitive scenario.
Holmes expressed that “comedy is somewhat similar to my sports. There’s an element of athleticism in stand-up comedy, particularly when considering competition. Everyone aspires to have the best performance or joke of the evening.” Furthermore, the “Woman of the Hour” star praised every Chiefs fan and player she met, describing it as a genuine pleasure. She also noted that the atmosphere in the city was highly infectious.
Previously, the Chiefs had partnered with Skydance Sports for a Hallmark movie production. Krug believes that they will focus on establishing a system to keep generating original content. Moreover, she affirms that the ‘Taylor Swift impact’ indeed exists.
Krug remarks that we’re under increased scrutiny, from our on-field performance to off-field events,” Krug says. “Clearly, the arrival of younger female fans has set off a chain reaction. We notice tales of fathers and their daughters watching together, families gathering for Chiefs games. This development has definitely influenced how we create our content.
