As a seasoned cinephile with over three decades of movie-watching under my belt, I must say that the expansion and diversification of Magma Entertainment‘s cinematic universe is an exciting development in Asian cinema. Having had the privilege of witnessing the evolution of Indonesian film industry, it’s heartening to see homegrown studios like Magma branching out into various genres, from horror to action.
At the ongoing Jogja-Netpac Asian Film Festival (JAFF) and JAFF Market, Magma Entertainment – a prominent Indonesian studio – showcased its future projects and debuted fresh content. This marks a broadening of their creative horizons, with plans to explore various genres from 2025 until 2028.
At a fully booked JAFF event, representatives from the company unveiled nine minutes of footage from “Qodrat 2,” the follow-up to their successful 2022 film. In attendance were director Charles Gozali, producer Linda Gozali, editor Teguh Raharjo, and the newly appointed executive producer Dian Sastrowardoyo.
Magma is unveiling its horror movie “The Damnation,” or “Tumbal Darah” as it’s known in its native language, for the first time as a collaborative effort with Wahana Kreator and Sinemaku Pictures at JAFF. The film features Martino Lio and Shallum Ratu Ke as stars. Producer Salman Aristo attributes Magma’s willingness to support “genuine narratives” and offer creative leeway in the horror genre as reasons for this collaboration.
Established in 2003 by siblings Charles and Linda Gozali, children of the late Hendrick Gozali – a trailblazer in the Garuda Films industry – Magma was born. The announcement of their upcoming projects revealed an expansion of the “Qodrat” universe, including “Qodrat 3” and the “The Devil’s Lair” series. Additionally, they have partnered with Komet Production for a horror film titled “Dance of the Damned,” which will serve as a spinoff within the “Qodrat” universe.
In addition to the new horror releases, there are also “Jump Scare” and a remake of “Sumpah Pocong” by Garuda Films. The action category offers titles such as “Perang Tanding,” “Death Trap,” “Luck,” and a Korean collaboration called “Kampung Kubur,” produced by Choi Yoon.
More Garuda Film remakes are in the works, including “Lady in a Trap” (“Perempuan Dalam Pasungan”), “The Wedding” (“Ranjang Pengantin”), and “November Boys.
Studio Caravan granted the company the license to use the folklore story “Timun Mas,” a fact emphasized by producer Linda Gozali due to its promising prospects on a global stage.
Magma also hosted an action masterclass featuring Cecep Ruhian, Jonathan and Teguh Raharjo.
