As a seasoned movie connoisseur with a penchant for Asian cinema and a soft spot for horror flicks, I can confidently say that the acquisition of “Hutang Nyawa” by EST N8 is an exciting development in the global film industry. With Billy Christian, a veteran horror director, at the helm, this Indonesian horror film promises to be a spine-tingling masterpiece. The presence of Taskya Namya and Rachel Vennya in the star-studded cast adds another layer of intrigue, especially given Vennya’s debut in the genre.
International business entity EST N8 recently purchased the rights for the upcoming Indonesian horror movie, “Hutang Nyawa,” set to debut on December 12th. This acquisition took place during the Jogja-Netpac Asian Film Festival (JAFF).
In the capable hands of filmmaker Billy Christian, who boasts over a decade of horror movie making experience, comes the chilling tale titled “Hutang Nyawa”. This story revolves around Erwina, the youngest family member, who is assigned to work in an antiquated factory. However, her peaceful life takes a sinister turn when she uncovers a terrifying truth: she has been chosen as a blood sacrifice to pay off her family’s long-standing debt to the devil. Christian’s latest creation, “Motel Melati”, was showcased at the renowned Sitges Film Festival.
This movie features actress Taskya Namya, recognized from Netflix’s action film “The Wandering Shadows” and horror flick “Suzzana,” alongside newcomer Rachel Vennya, a popular social media personality venturing into acting in this genre. It is the creation of Visinema Pictures, the production company responsible for successful films such as “Philosophy of Coffee” and “The Cemara Family.
The transaction for “Hutang Nyawa” was facilitated by Tenten Wei, Sophie Shi, and Cathy Ni from EST N8. Notably, EST N8’s Asian collection encompasses Awi Suryadi’s horror film “Perewangan,” Kongkiat Komesiri’s thriller “Delivery Man,” and the award-winning Korean action movie “Mash Ville” (which received the Fantasia Best Director Award).
Jaeson Ma, head of EST Studios, declared that ‘Hutang Nyawa’ is a gripping, spine-tingling masterwork that showcases the might of Indonesian cinema. According to him, Billy Christian’s direction and an outstanding cast make it a film not to be missed.
In 2022, I’ve come across EST Studios, a remarkable venture founded by Jaeson Ma and Eric Tu that is dedicated to amplifying a rich tapestry of Asian narratives on the global stage. Their current portfolio brims with captivating projects showcasing a multitude of Asian filmmakers and tales, such as the critically acclaimed documentary “Hidden Letters,” which was shortlisted for an Oscar, and the vibrant series “K-Pops!”, which graced the Toronto International Film Festival.
Established in 2023, N8 – founded by Kris Eiamsakulrat and Rachel Y. Wu – has made its mark on significant Southeast Asian cinema endeavors. These include co-producing the popular Thai horror movie “Home For Rent” and Bhutan’s Oscar entry “The Monk and The Gun.” Future productions include a documentary titled “Heals,” created in collaboration with World of Wonder, and “A Useful Ghost,” a supernatural film helmed by Ratchapoom Boonbunchachoke.
