Indie hit Slay the Spire 2 blasts past Marathon with over 150k players

Wow, Slay the Spire 2 absolutely exploded at launch! I couldn’t believe over 100,000 of us were playing it on Steam at the same time within the first hour of early access. It was crazy!

March 5th saw several exciting video game releases. Many gamers were eagerly awaiting Marathon, the new multiplayer shooter from Bungie, after years of anticipation. However, a smaller, indie card game – priced at just $24.99 and centered around a dangerous tower – was also gaining popularity.

Slay the Spire 2 hits 100k concurrent players in under an hour

Slay the Spire 2 quickly became a hit after its launch on Steam. Within the first hour, over 100,000 people were playing simultaneously, and that number jumped to 135,000 after just 90 minutes. As of today, it’s currently the most popular game on Steam, with over 150,000 players – significantly more than the 86,459 playing Marathon.

It’s no surprise this happened. The original Slay the Spire, first released in 2017, really created the deckbuilding roguelike genre we know today. Before that game, combining card strategy and dungeon exploration wasn’t very popular.

The new installment continues the story right after the first game ended, but it’s much bigger and better. Mega Crit Games added five characters to play as (including two new ones), completely reworked the card and item systems, and introduced a cooperative mode where up to four players can climb the Spire together. According to the developers, this version of the Spire is more challenging and rewarding than ever before.

The game launched into early access with a strong following – over 100,000 players had already expressed interest. Even more remarkably, it quickly attracted over 60,000 concurrent players within the first hour, making it one of the most successful indie game launches on Steam in recent years.

The developers at Mega Crit plan to add even more to the game, including new cards, enemies, and levels, as they continue working on it.
