India is considering a unique and potentially controversial plan to secure parts of its border with Bangladesh. The idea involves using natural predators – crocodiles and venomous snakes – as a living barrier to deter illegal crossings.
Border Security Force officials are reviewing the proposal and exploring different options for securing areas where building a traditional fence isn’t feasible because of the landscape and potential for flooding.
Reports indicate that significant parts of the border are still hard to fully secure. Changing rivers and swampy areas are making it impossible to build structures in crucial locations.
India explores reptile deployment for border control
So, I was reading about the India-Bangladesh border, and it turns out India’s put a ton of work into building a fence to secure it. But it’s not quite finished – about 20% is still open. That leaves around 530 miles unfenced, and honestly, they say about 110 miles of that just can’t be fenced because it’s all rivers and areas that flood constantly. Makes sense, right? You can’t really build a fence where it’ll just wash away!
Officials have discussed using crocodiles and venomous snakes to secure certain areas. On March 26th, the Border Security Force asked its teams on the ground to consider if this idea would actually work in practice.
Officials have been discussing this idea for several weeks. Records show the conversations began in early February 2026, during a meeting led by Praveen Kumar, the director-general of Border Security Force.

Experts are calling this idea a possible “natural defense,” but it’s still being studied and isn’t fully developed yet.
We’ve already discussed internally how difficult it might be to manage animals in open spaces, and what dangers that could pose to local communities.
Experts are also concerned that gathering predators in one place could upset the natural balance of the environment and create new dangers for people.
This plan follows Prime Minister Modi and his administration’s ongoing efforts to strengthen border security, which now include technologies like drones and infrared cameras.
Officials have emphasized that the plan to use reptiles is still being considered, and it’s just one of several options they’re looking into.
