Independence Day Director Remembers 1 US President’s Surprising Reaction

Director Roland Emmerich remembers Bill Clinton unexpectedly walking out during a White House screening of Independence Day. Emmerich described the experience as strange, noting that he and the producer couldn’t help but feel the irony of watching the White House get destroyed on screen while in the White House.

Roland Emmerich says Bill Clinton briefly ran out during Independence Day screening

In 2021, while commemorating the 25th anniversary of ‘Independence Day’ with The Hollywood Reporter, director Roland Emmerich recounted an unusual event. He said that during a White House screening of the film, President Bill Clinton actually left the room.

Immediately after the White House was destroyed on screen, Clinton abruptly left the room. Director Roland Emmerich explained that Clinton returned a minute later, visibly shaken, and he and co-writer Dean Devlin exchanged amused glances.

Okay, so there was this moment where someone briefly left the screening, and honestly, I was a little worried! But the director quickly explained it happens all the time. Apparently, in test screenings, people would rush right out, then immediately come back in because they’d been so engrossed in the film they hadn’t even gone to the bathroom beforehand! It’s a good sign when a movie grabs you like that, right?

It’s almost eerie seeing this now, with everything happening with President Trump and his recent renovations to the White House – specifically, tearing down the East Wing for a new ballroom. I was fascinated to learn that Roland Emmerich, Dean Devlin, and even Bill Pullman recently got together for a private screening and talked about all of this. They had some really interesting insights to share, and it felt strangely relevant given what’s going on today.

While in New York promoting ‘Independence Day,’ producer Dean Devlin got a surprising call. He remembers answering the phone in his hotel room and being told someone from the White House was on the line. They asked if he could hold, then informed him that the President wanted to see the movie that very night.

Shortly after, the three filmmakers were invited to the White House for a private screening of their movie with Bill and Hillary Clinton. Director Emmerich noted the unusual screening room, describing it as a repurposed bowling alley with a somewhat small screen.

The filmmakers admitted they were incredibly nervous while the president watched their movie, especially knowing it featured the White House being destroyed. Devlin remembered sharing a look with Emmerich when the explosion happened, jokingly pointing out the irony of watching the White House blow up while inside the White House. He described the whole experience as surreal.
