I’ve noticed Netflix is amazing at giving shows and movies a second life – so many things that didn’t do well originally are now huge hits on the platform! The latest example is this recent R-rated horror sequel that’s really found its audience there.
Currently, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple is the fourth most popular movie on Netflix in the United States, according to FlixPatrol. Given that it’s a horror film, it’s no surprise it quickly became a top 10 hit.
Netflix has a deal with Sony where new movies become available on the streaming service 90 to 120 days after they’re released in theaters. However, the movie 28 Years Later arrived on Netflix much sooner – just 74 days after it premiered in cinemas on January 16th. The Bone Temple is also included in this agreement.
The World of 28 Days Later Gets Revisited 28 Years Later
28 Years Later: The Bone Temple is the fourth film in the 28 Days Later series and the second of a planned three-part 28 Years Later story. Picking up right after last year’s 28 Years Later, the movie follows Spike as he’s taken in by the sinister cult led by Jimmy Crystal, known as “Sir Lord,” while Dr. Ian Kelson unexpectedly connects with Samson, who is one of the highly evolved, aggressive infected known as an Alpha.
Alfie Williams, Jack O’Connell, Ralph Fiennes, and Chi Lewis-Parry return in The Bone Temple to play their characters from 28 Years Later: Spike, Jimmy Crystal (known as “Sir Lord”), Dr. Ian Kelson, and Samson. Erin Kellyman also reprises her role as Kelly, and the film introduces new cast members Louis Ashbourne Serkis and Mirren Mack.
Despite receiving overwhelmingly positive reviews – a 92% ‘certified fresh’ rating from critics and an 88% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes – the movie 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple didn’t perform well at the box office. It earned just $58.5 million worldwide, despite costing $63 million to make. This is a significant drop from the previous film, 28 Years Later (2025), which made $151.2 million globally on a budget of $60 million.
Will the 28 Years Later Trilogy Get Its Conclusion?
Historically, a movie that didn’t do well at the box office, like The Bone Temple, would usually mean the end of that series for several years. But thankfully, despite The Bone Temple‘s poor ticket sales, its positive reviews might be enough to convince Sony to make the third and final movie in the 28 Years Later series.
Danny Boyle, who previously directed 28 Days Later and 28 Years Later, is returning to direct the next film in the series. Alex Garland will write the script, as he has for all the movies except 28 Weeks Later.
Details about the story of 28 Years Later 3 are still a secret, but Cillian Murphy will be back as Jim, the main character from 28 Days Later. He didn’t appear in 28 Weeks Later or the first 28 Years Later film, but he recently filmed a brief scene with Maiya Eastmond, who plays his on-screen daughter, Sam.
28 Years Later: The Bone Temple is currently streaming on Netflix.
