Obsidian Entertainment is releasing a new public beta for Pillars of Eternity on November 5th. This update will be available on Steam and the Xbox Store, letting players try out the game’s turn-based combat mode. This is exciting news for fans, as Pillars of Eternity is celebrating its tenth anniversary this year.
Players who liked the Turn-Based Mode in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire will feel right at home, as this version includes several improvements based on their feedback, the developers announced.
Here’s a breakdown of the key changes made to the turn-based combat system in Pillars of Eternity compared to Deadfire.
- Turns will depend on the character’s overall speed, making attributes and mechanics more important compared to the real-time system with active pause.
- Things like switching weapons, drinking potions, or opening modal windows will be free actions, but you can only do one of each type per turn.
- The pace of combat will be faster, and the mortality will be higher, making every fight way more intense.
- Players will be able to freely switch between turn-based and classic modes, both at the start of the game and during gameplay.
The beta test will continue for a while, and Obsidian wants players to share their thoughts and report any problems they find. They’ll use this feedback to improve the mode before officially launching it.
Along with the announcement of beta testing, the developers released a video featuring Creative Director Josh Sawyer. In the video, he discusses why turn-based mode is so important to Pillars of Eternity and how player feedback influenced this new update.
We first learned about this new game mode for Pillars of Eternity back in March. I reported then that Obsidian Entertainment intended to let fans try it out, with testing for turn-based combat planned for later in the year, though details were scarce. Now, those details have been released.
