After years of waiting, EA has brought back the popular Skate franchise with a new, free-to-play game. It’s currently available as an early access title, meaning it’s still quite basic and the ongoing service model has caused some debate among longtime fans. However, everyone seems to agree on one thing: the new Skate perfectly captures the feeling of skating from the original games.
When you first start playing, the controls might feel a little different than you expect. Luckily, there’s a simple fix! The game has some helpful assists turned on by default that make skating easier. Beyond adjusting those, we also recommend tweaking a few other settings – particularly those for custom ramps – to improve your experience. Finally, there’s an audio setting for the game’s narrator that can make things much more enjoyable over time. Let’s dive into the details.
Best settings to make new Skate make feel like the old Skate
To get started, go to the settings menu, then select ‘Gameplay’ and navigate to the ‘Assists’ tab. If you want a classic skateboarding experience, lower all the difficulty settings. I personally kept ‘Allow Fall Height’ on the medium setting so I could still pull off awesome jumps.
And there’s still more to adjust! Below that, you’ll find On-Board Helpers. Just like before, it’s best to disable these. If you’re not quite ready to turn everything off at once, you can leave ‘Prevent Low Air Spins’ enabled – it helps keep you stable at high speeds when you’re moving around a bit. However, you’ll eventually want to turn that off as well to gain full control.
At the bottom of this menu, you’ll find options for ‘Off-Board Helpers,’ which are designed to make it easier to move around on foot. This game lets you do a lot more while walking – like climbing buildings – compared to previous versions. We recommend using these helpers to speed up foot travel so you can get back to skating quickly.
Good job – you’ve made the new Skate game just as challenging and difficult as the older versions! There are also a couple of other important settings you should be aware of soon.
Turn off other people’s quick-drop ramps
The latest Skate game revives a popular feature from Skate 3: the simple ability to place ramps and other objects wherever you like. However, this new version is always online, meaning the game world is full of other players who can also place ramps. Knowing how players can sometimes be, it’s easy to foresee situations where people might use this feature to be annoying.
Luckily, there’s a simple fix for this issue, though it’s hidden away and not in the usual settings. To find it, press the right direction on your d-pad to open the quick drop menu, then press the Options or Start button. Scroll down to the Multiplayer section. Here, you can control whether you’re affected by ramps built by other players, and importantly, prevent other players from altering your own ramp creations.
After you finish that, there’s one more setting you might want to adjust, especially when you first start using it.
How to turn off the narrator
As you learn to play Skate, a character named Vee guides you through tutorials and missions, much like Giovanni Reda did in the original games. While Vee is helpful, some players might find her constant talking a bit annoying after a while. Luckily, you can turn off her extra commentary in the game’s Audio settings by disabling “Gameplay Vee Comments.”
