To put it simply, my preferred wrestler has always been Mick Foley. His book is quite engaging, and I’ve long aspired to pen one myself. However, when the pandemic occurred, I found myself thinking, “This might just be the perfect moment to write my own book.

It seems that Mick Foley provided significant assistance in your project, right? He even dedicated an entire day talking to you on the phone, meticulously going through each page with you, and even took care of minor details like punctuation. Despite my suggestion for a copywriter for such tasks, he persisted.

In Dublin where you spent your childhood, what were the common expectations for a girl growing up at that time?

I’ve consistently had the belief that I could headline WrestleMania, with the exception of my evident flaws like struggling in P.E., my history of substance use, and general lack of responsibility – however, these factors would not disqualify me based on my gender.

As a movie critic, I’ve often pondered about the shift in Hollywood, where once upon a time, stars maintained a strict facade of privacy. Now, things are different. In this era of social media, we’re all connected like never before. And as much as I appreciate the old-school mystique, I can’t deny the allure of peeking behind the scenes. The audience craves it, and so do I. There’s a certain thrill in knowing the drama that unfolds off-screen, especially when it enhances our fascination with the on-screen magic.

When wrestlers maneuver me into a situation where I’m questioning the authenticity of it all, it’s such an enchanting sensation… until it becomes real. Emotions get wounded in this world of entertainment, don’t they? In wrestling, there’s a saying: “Don’t let your performance turn into a genuine conflict.” Everything is staged, everything is cooperative. However, when someone deviates from the script and blurts out something unexpected – that’s gold, you want to see them clash, because someone might throw a real punch. That’s the thrill of wrestling. Unexpected things can always happen.

In the early stages of your profession, you were frequently the sole female presence. Did this experience ever lead you to contemplate whether your gender could potentially pose a challenge?

Initially, when you joined WWE, it felt like a shift from the vibrant, friendly atmosphere of the independent circuit. While the indies were more like a joyful carnival where everyone was eager to collaborate, WWE had a competitive edge to it. The message was clear: you weren’t just filling a role, but aiming to seize one. There was also an undercurrent of tension due to strict rules, such as the prohibition of violent actions by women or punching. Every day, I lived in fear of being let go.

Wasn’t it fascinating to see you, Sasha Banks, Bayley, and Charlotte Flair being recognized by fans as the Four Horsewomen while you were all in NXT together? I can’t help but wonder if a genuine Four Horsewomen faction would have been amazing. In hindsight, it seems like there was a chance for such an alliance, but perhaps the opportunity passed us by. It feels like Vince McMahon may not have fully grasped its potential, but who knows? Maybe someday, anything could happen again.

In my perspective, playing a compelling heel in wrestling involves understanding your role effectively – it’s about making the audience root for the good guy, ensuring they don’t perceive you as likable or cool. Conversely, a baby face should be someone everyone adores. However, this can be challenging since we often find ourselves drawn to characters with flaws. Interestingly, when you’re a heel, there’s more freedom to entertain without constraints. It’s simpler to portray an appealing heel than a baby face who consistently fights valiantly and does what’s right. A likable baby face, in my view, is someone who is authentic, honest, and vulnerable – a person you’d want to share a drink with.

Is it generally challenging to sustain friendships in this field due to constant competition? However, I’ve managed to maintain some wonderful friendships, such as with Kevin Owens and Rami Sebei. Interestingly, we didn’t compete for the same position, but rather found camaraderie in our shared experiences. Natalya is a long-standing friend, having known her since I was 18 when we embarked on my first tour of Japan together. We keep in touch frequently, and we spoke earlier today.

I’m curious about the dilemma you faced when deciding to make your relationship with Seth Rollins, your husband, known publicly? Given our backgrounds in wrestling, keeping personal matters private is often crucial for success. We were unsure whether we should reveal our relationship, but if we did, it would likely lead to Vince McMahon wanting us in a storyline together. And that turned out to be challenging.

In the book, you’ve described an instance where you had to vigorously advocate for how your pregnancy announcement unfolded on RAW. Originally, the creative team wanted a scene with you confronting the backstage interviewer and using elaborate, grandiose words, but Asuka would join in as well. However, this wasn’t going to work out as planned due to your hormonal state. You were so upset that you felt like you could have hit someone. It was crucial to know when to stand firm. At the early stages of pregnancy, you may not be aware of which battles are worth fighting. But in this case, I stood my ground and fought for what I believed was best, ultimately resulting in a better outcome than initially intended.

As a fan, it’s a question I’ve seen asked quite often about Vince McMahon. Frankly, I don’t find it frustrating. My interactions with him were mostly positive, barring one instance where he scolded me after WrestleMania. Overall, he was kind to me and showed me respect, even though I recognize that not everyone had the same experience. It can be challenging to separate the public image from the person you’re interacting with at any given moment. We all do our best to connect in the present and form opinions based on our personal encounters.

As a film enthusiast, penning this story was an intriguing journey for me. By the time the subject of my book had resigned from his position, I found myself well into the process of refining and polishing my work. Incorporating recent developments might have added complexity to my narrative, but I chose instead to stick with my personal experiences in shaping the final product.

What lies ahead for Becky Lynch?I’m currently preparing for a half-marathon. There are other things I’ve been working on that I can’t reveal just yet. However, if you believe my final move in the career I’ve built will be getting shut down by Dominik Mysterio with a slammed door, that’s unlikely. As for when we’ll see a return, I’m not sure. But I’ve been having a blast and working on some projects that I’m really excited about. When I can share them with you, I think they’re going to be amazing.
