‘If I Had Legs I’d Kick You’ Star Rose Byrne and Director Mary Bronstein Praise ASAP Rocky’s Acting Chops Amid Ongoing Trial: He ‘Brings a Natural Charisma That Cannot Be Taught’

At the Berlin Film Festival prior to the movie’s global premiere on Monday evening, actress Rose Byrne and director Mary Bronstein shared their experiences working with the multitalented ASAP Rocky. Known for his skills in music and acting, ASAP Rocky is often referred to as a “renaissance man.” However, he couldn’t participate in the festival circuit for this film, which made its world premiere at Sundance last month, because of his ongoing legal case involving accusations of firing a gun at a former associate.

In response to being asked about choosing Rocky’s cast, Bronstein expressed her desire for unconventional actors in supporting roles, such as Conan O’Brien. This decision was made primarily for two reasons: firstly, to provide Rose with intriguing material to work with, and secondly, to signal to the audience that she is not adhering to any predictable patterns or expectations.

The movie titled “If I Had Legs I’d Kick You” centers around Linda [Byrne], a character whose world falls apart as she grapples with her child’s puzzling illness, an absent spouse, a missing person, and a deteriorating bond with her psychotherapist. As per the synopsis, these challenges test Linda’s resilience. In this film, Rocky portrays James, the superintendent of a motel who frequently interacts with Linda.

Bronstein added, “Rocky possesses an undeniable charm that can’t be forced or learned.” He explained, “‘Wink at Linda’ is written in the script… This man has winked before, and it works. You can’t teach that kind of thing, and I wanted to capitalize on it. Plus, Rocky was eager to try something new.

EbMaster inquired about Rocky missing Sundance and Berlin due to his trial, and Bronstein replied: “I’ve been communicating with him directly, so there’s no need for me to address him publicly, but let me tell you, it was an absolute pleasure collaborating with him, and he was simply a joy to work with on set.

Byrne commented, “He embodies the essence of a true polymath. His passion envelops art, fashion, cinema, and he holds profound admiration for every genre and artist. I found myself completely charmed by him.

Rocky first showcased his acting skills in the 2015 movie “Dope,” followed by a few appearances as himself in various films. However, he’s now focusing more on traditional acting roles, with “If I Had Legs I’d Kick You” and Spike Lee’s upcoming production “Highest 2 Lowest,” which features Denzel Washington.

With Byrne, Rocky, and O’Bren, the cast of “If I Had Legs I’d Kick You” also features Danielle Macdonald, Lark White, Ivy Wolk, Daniel Zolghadri, and Delaney Quinn.

In the trial against rapper and actor Rocky on Thursday, his legal team presented their closing statements, contending that the firearm involved was merely a prop. He stands accused of two felony counts related to assault with a semiautomatic weapon, stemming from an incident with his ex-collaborator ASAP Relli in 2021. The jury is currently considering the case, and if found guilty, Rocky could face up to 24 years behind bars.
