If I Had Feet to Dance, I’d Tap Away My Stress” narrates the story of a mother (Rose Byrne) who is drowning in the pressures of everyday life. In this film, Byrne engages with several unique characters, including Conan O’Brien portraying her no-nonsense therapist, and A$AP Rocky as a new companion she encounters during a challenging period.
On the day following their film’s premiere at Sundance, writer-director Mary Bronstein and Byrne paid a visit to EbMaster Studio, an Audible presentation. They expressed that one delightful aspect of the filming process was collaborating with O’Brien.
He was extremely humble and completely dedicated to the role, which contrasted sharply with his natural warmth and generosity, as this character was quite unlike him,” Byrne noted. “This figure in the story is not sympathetic. Navigating some delicate situations during these therapy sessions was challenging, requiring a great deal of subtle, intimate collaboration between us. Despite being a small production, he put in a tremendous effort.
Bronstein also detailed the preparation she did with O’Brien before the shoot.
She remarked that he showed an extraordinary amount of selflessness, devoting both his spirit, time, and effort to this project. Upon receiving the script, he admitted his inexperience and uncertainty about his abilities, jokingly adding that if he failed, she could let him go but they’d still be friends. Over a week-long intensive rehearsal process in LA, they worked together for several hours each day at his podcast studio. This was quite demanding, resembling a theater workshop. He placed complete trust in her guidance, a fact she still finds hard to believe. The character he portrays is starkly different from his real-life persona, and overcoming this disparity was a challenge they needed to surmount. Once they did, he delivered a monologue that she had initially deemed unperformable due to its pedantic nature. However, he managed it admirably, leaving her greatly impressed.
