Idris Elba returns as Luther in explosive first set photos from new Netflix movie

Idris Elba is back as the popular detective Luther, and filming for a new movie has begun in London.

It’s been three years since the last installment, Luther: The Fallen Sun, where fans watched Elba as the detective pursuing the dangerous serial killer David Robey (Andy Serkis). The film was seen by many as Elba’s take on the long-running speculation about him potentially playing James Bond, featuring a more complex case than those he typically solved in the original BBC series.

The case wasn’t just about Luther escaping from prison; it led him and DCI Odette Raine to rural Norway to shut down a disturbing torture broadcast happening on the dark web. The story concluded with a hint that Luther might be joining MI5.

It’s obvious the detective’s journey isn’t finished, and now pictures have surfaced showing Idris Elba has begun filming a new Luther film for Netflix.

The first images from the set of the new Luther movie have appeared on X (formerly Twitter), posted by UnBoxPHD. They depict Luther running through the rainy streets of London amidst what looks like a lot of trouble. One photo shows a car engulfed in flames, with someone being pulled to safety.

Good news for fans of Luther! The upcoming film will feature the return of the chilling Alice Morgan (Ruth Wilson) alongside a new, violent case. According to Netflix, Luther will be pulled back into detective work when London is struck by a series of disturbing and unpredictable murders.

As a huge Luther fan, I was so excited to hear Neil Cross, the show’s creator, talk about how he always wondered what happened to Luther and the characters after the show ended. He kept thinking about what they were up to, and what kind of trouble might be brewing in London without Luther around to solve it. That’s why they decided to bring the story back and show us what happens next – and honestly, it’s amazing!
