Idris Elba is adding to the speculation about him becoming the next James Bond. For more than ten years, people have talked about him taking on the role, but he’s consistently said he hasn’t been cast.
Amazon MGM Studios is planning a fresh take on James Bond with a new series of movies. A major question for film fans right now is who will be the next 007, with actors like Idris Elba, Henry Cavill, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Callum Turner frequently mentioned as potential choices. While Elba has previously dismissed talk of him playing Bond, he recently sparked speculation again by sharing a mysterious photo with past James Bond actors.
The actor posted a TikTok video showcasing wax figures of past James Bond actors – Daniel Craig, Sean Connery, George Lazenby, Roger Moore, and Timothy Dalton. The video concludes with the actor standing alongside the figures.
Idris Elba jokingly blamed his wife for posting a video of himself, set to the James Bond theme song. The video quickly went viral, racking up over 7.2 million views and nearly 1 million likes.
Okay, so I just saw Sabrina Elba talking about that video of Idris with a bunch of other handsome guys! She was on Good Morning America promoting their skincare line, S’ABLE Labs, and she was asked about it. She basically said she was just stirring up some fun, and then playfully pointed out how great Idris looked in the video – and honestly, she’s right! It was all in good fun, apparently.
When someone suggested Idris Elba should be cast and urged the producers to simply confirm it, she enthusiastically agreed.
Idris Elba Addressed the James Bond Rumors Several Times
Idris Elba has been connected to the possibility of playing James Bond for more than ten years, ever since his time on The Wire. However, in 2023, he indicated the rumors weren’t true. He shared, “I really enjoy the Bond films and have a good relationship with the people who make them. We were all joking about the speculation, because that’s all it was.”
He also explained that he lost interest in the role when discussions shifted to race. In a conversation with Will Arnett, Jason Bateman, and Sean Hayes on their podcast, SmartLess, he said he had initially been excited about the possibility of taking on the part.

As actors, we know certain roles are highly sought after, like being named ‘Sexiest Man Alive’ – something I experienced with People magazine in 2018. However, being considered for James Bond felt like reaching the absolute peak of my career.
He explained that while most people around the world were pleased at the possibility of him being considered, a few opposed it and turned the situation unpleasant. This opposition focused on race and led to unfair criticism directed at him.
The next James Bond film doesn’t have a confirmed title yet, but Denis Villeneuve, the director of Dune, is set to direct. Amy Pascal and David Heyman will be producing the movie.
