I’d Never Thought About Wrapping On An Animated Movie, But Tim Allen Revealed Why His Last Day On Toy Story 5 Was Pretty Weird

We’re really looking forward to Toy Story 5, which is scheduled for release in 2026, and the return of Tim Allen as Buzz Lightyear and Tom Hanks as Woody. Tim Allen recently finished recording his lines for the film, and it made him realize how emotionally different it is to say goodbye to an animated character compared to a live-action one.

Tim Allen recently finished working on the film and shared that saying goodbye to the character was emotional. He expressed his love for the film’s story and said he feels grateful to have played Buzz Lightyear for so long. He discussed his experience on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

It’s disappointing because real life isn’t like the movies, where they announce someone is finished filming and everyone applauds.

It’s common for movies and TV shows to have a big celebration when an actor finishes their work on a project. But making Toy Story 5 is different, so it hasn’t been like that. As Allen explained further:

They simply received a brief ‘Okay, that’s all, thank you, Tim.’ He then told them their contribution was finished. There were about eight people watching from behind a window, and they were thanked and dismissed quickly.

Tim Allen also mentioned he wasn’t able to see his friend and co-star, Tom Hanks, while they were working on the project. He explained that he visited Hanks in New York City, where Hanks is currently performing in a stage show called The World of Tomorrow, which runs until December 21st.

The biggest buzz around Toy Story 5 will likely start when Tim Allen, Tom Hanks, and the rest of the cast begin promoting the film in the summer of 2026. Joan Cusack will return as Jessie, and Tony Hale will reprise his role as Forky. Joining them is Conan O’Brien, who will voice a new character named Smarty Pants.

The Toy Story movies have a history of hinting at being the last installment before another sequel is announced, so it’s possible we haven’t heard the last of Buzz Lightyear! Director Andrew Stanton recently explained that he doesn’t believe anyone is being cheated out of a complete story with a third film.

The first Toy Story 5 trailer came out earlier this month. You can check out below:

While details are limited, the latest trailer clearly hints at what’s to come in the next movie. This time around, the toys will be competing for attention with a new tablet called Lilypad. This is the first Toy Story film since the hugely successful fourth movie, which earned over $1 billion globally. Toy Story 5 hits theaters on May 1st.
