The Green Lantern Corps is a highly skilled peacekeeping organization in the DC Comics universe. Only the most courageous and truthful individuals are chosen to use the powerful Green Lantern ring. But being selected isn’t enough – potential Lanterns must also demonstrate their abilities through rigorous training. Interestingly, a key part of this training is similar to a well-known test from Star Trek.
Green Lantern Corps #10 delves into a detailed test of new recruits, penned by Morgan Hampton and illustrated by Ig Guara, Fernando Pasarin, Will Conrad, and Oclair Albert. The issue features Guy Gardner and Kilowog putting recruits through their paces, starting with a surprising endurance challenge: removing their Power Rings. But this is just the beginning of a test that will likely remind Star Trek enthusiasts of a certain familiar scenario.
What Star Trek idea did the Green Lantern Corps adapt?
After the new recruits finished a grueling obstacle course, Guy Gardner unexpectedly attacked them with a massive energy construct. Kilowog revealed this construct was actually Aleta Zahir, and ordered the recruits to defeat it, even though they had no weapons.
This test is very similar to the famous Kobayashi Maru simulation from the movie Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. In the simulation, Starfleet cadets attempt to rescue a ship that’s trapped in a dangerous area and under attack. The test isn’t meant to be won; it’s designed to see how future officers react when they face an impossible situation and fail.
The Aleta Zahir training exercise for Green Lanterns isn’t just about seeing if new recruits can handle pressure. It’s also designed to build teamwork and encourage them to use their own skills and think on their feet, rather than always relying on their Power Ring.
Green Lantern Corps #10 is now available at comic shops everywhere.
