I finally got around to watching Edge of Tomorrow with Tom Cruise, and I’m kicking myself for not seeing it sooner! I’m a fan of Cruise, enjoy war movies, and usually like sci-fi, so I’m not sure what held me back. Luckily, I watched it on Netflix and really enjoyed it, especially how Cruise portrayed his character – it was a pleasant surprise.

I Thought I Knew What It Was About
I had a general idea of what Edge of Tomorrow was about – a futuristic military story involving time travel, and that Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt starred in it. That was pretty much it. Honestly, I avoided watching it for a while because it seemed a bit silly. I’m a big fan of Tom Cruise, having grown up watching films like Top Gun and Days of Thunder repeatedly. But I’m starting to get tired of seeing him always play the flawless hero, like in the upcoming Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning.
I was instantly hooked by Edge of Tomorrow. Tom Cruise plays Major William Cage, and what I found refreshing is that he’s not the typical hero – he doesn’t even start out wanting to be one. He’s flawed, a bit of a mess, and not a very good soldier. I usually expect something different from Cruise, and I was wrong to think I wouldn’t enjoy the film because of it. In fact, I believe it’s one of his best performances ever.

The Whole Cast Is Great, But Cruise Really Shines
The acting in this movie is superb, with Emily Blunt, Bill Paxton, and Brendan Gleeson all delivering fantastic performances. But Tom Cruise truly shines – even more so than in his other films. I particularly enjoyed his character’s development, although it felt a bit fast-paced at times. It’s unusual to see him play someone so unlikeable as Cage at the start of Edge of Tomorrow, and it’s a welcome change. While he’s played flawed characters before, like his amusingly awful role in Tropic Thunder, Cage is genuinely unpleasant, both as a person and within the story, and that’s a good thing.
Look, by the time Edge of Tomorrow finishes, Tom Cruise’s character absolutely becomes the hero you’d anticipate, but honestly, it feels so much more earned. It’s different than something like Top Gun or Mission: Impossible where he’s instantly a capable hero – which, by the way, still makes me wonder why Marvel hasn’t snapped him up for the MCU! I adore those films and his roles in them, but Cage in Edge of Tomorrow is just a better character arc. It’s one of those movies I could seriously rewatch endlessly – or, you know, relive it over and over like he does in the film – and I fully intend to. I might even throw it on again tonight, actually.
