As a dedicated fan of the Harry Potter universe, I can confidently say that Ralph Fiennes‘ decision to play Lord Voldemort was nothing short of magical. It’s hard to imagine anyone else embodying the dark lord with such chilling precision.
The Harry Potter movie franchise has amassed approximately $7.8 billion at the box office (according to Box Office Mojo), making it one of the most financially successful series. This blockbuster series has also catapulted numerous actors, both veteran and newcomers, into stardom. Remarkably, these actors gained widespread recognition not just because of their existing industry status, but primarily due to their portrayal of characters in the enchanting world of Harry Potter, a series cherished by kids and adults alike.
Initially, it appeared that being cast in the Harry Potter series would be seen by many actors as a significant opportunity. However, there were some, such as Ralph Fiennes who portrayed Lord Voldemort in Harry Potter, who harbored doubts about this proposition.
At first, the actor considered refusing offers from the creators behind the series about the young wizard’s adventures. He hadn’t read the books or seen the movies, and wasn’t keen on taking on the role of the famous villain, as he shared during an interview on Watch What Happens Live.
Previously, I hadn’t read the books or watched the initial movies, and I must admit, I was a bit haughty regarding them. However, casting director Mary Selway, an esteemed Englishwoman, persuaded me otherwise. We have a long history together, and she can be firm when she needs to be. She simply told me, “You need to be part of this film. Just do it, Ralph.” Her insistence was compelling. Additionally, my sister, whose kids were around 11 and 12 at the time, reacted similarly. When I expressed doubts about Voldemort, she exclaimed, “What? They’re asking you to play Voldemort? You have to accept this role!
It’s intriguing that Fiennes hesitated to join the Harry Potter series, given that the initial films had already achieved significant popularity. After all, it seems unexpected for an actor to turn down a chance to be part of a successful franchise, particularly when he was going to portray one of the series’ most captivating and crucial characters.
Luckily, the actor agreed to take on the role in the Harry Potter movies, resulting in an outstanding portrayal of Voldemort on screen. Fiennes delivered an exceptional performance, and it’s clear that the next actor to play Lord Voldemort in the TV series will have a difficult task ahead, as their performance is bound to be measured against that of their predecessor.
