Mattel had a huge success in 2023 with the *Barbie* movie, which critics loved and earned $1.4 billion worldwide, making it the year’s biggest film. Now, the company is focusing on bringing back *Masters of the Universe* to the big screen. The reboot is planned for release during the summer blockbuster season in 2026. Robbie Brenner, president of Mattel Studios, recently shared that the film is ambitious and she’s impressed with the director’s vision after seeing an early cut.
At MIPCOM, Mattel’s head of franchise development, Brenner, discussed several upcoming movie and TV projects, starting with the impressive visuals she saw while visiting the set of the new *Masters of the Universe* film (as reported by The Hollywood Reporter).
I visited the set last year, and it was the largest I’ve ever seen – bigger than even the set for Barbie! We used two or three sound stages and took over eight backlots. The movie features incredibly imaginative characters, including some that are eight feet tall, walking around the set.
This movie marks the second time the *Masters of the Universe* story has been adapted into a live-action film, following the 1987 version starring Dolph Lundgren. Plans for a new adaptation have been in development since 2007, and filming finally took place between January and June of this year. According to Robbie Brenner, this latest *Masters of the Universe* film is being made with a large budget to create a visually stunning and epic portrayal of the He-Man mythology. She also stated:
I recently saw the director’s cut of the film, and I was completely amazed. This will be our second movie released in theaters, and I believe it’s a great pairing with ‘Barbie.’ I think audiences will really love it – it’s incredibly fun and offers a totally different experience.
Okay, so I’m really curious to see if *Masters of the Universe* can hit the same heights as *Barbie*, but it’s going to be a totally different vibe. It’s way more sci-fi and fantasy action! The movie stars Nicholas Galitzine as Prince Adam – basically, he crash-landed on Earth, which is also his mom’s home planet, when he was a kid and got stuck here. Now, after 20 years, he’s finally found the Power Sword and is heading back to Eternia to become He-Man and fight all the bad guys, led by Jared Leto as Skeletor. I’m excited!
The new movie *Masters of the Universe*, scheduled for release on June 6, 2026, features a star-studded cast including Camila Mendes as Teela, Idris Elba as Man-At-Arms, Alison Brie as Evil-Lyn, and Kristen Wiig as Roboto. Travis Knight directed the film, and Chris Butler wrote the screenplay. Before the movie comes out, you can enjoy several recent adaptations of the franchise on Netflix, including the animated series *Masters of the Universe: Revelation*, its sequel *Revolution*, and *He-Man and the Masters of the Universe*.
