A new animated movie, In Your Dreams, just arrived on Netflix this weekend. It features Simu Liu and Cristin Milioti – both known for their work in superhero films – as the voices of a brother and sister’s parents. The siblings discover a hidden world within their dreams. TopMob recently spoke with Liu and Milioti about collaborating on both the voice acting and the original songs for the film.

Simu Liu And Cristin Milioti Get To Sing In Netflix’s In Your Dreams
During a conversation with Cristin Milioti and another actor at Netflix in Los Angeles, Milioti revealed how much she enjoyed singing as part of her role as Mom. She explained that she really loved it, saying:
That day was a highlight for me. I really enjoyed working on the film, especially recording vocals. I loved being able to harmonize with Simu’s pre-recorded track, spending the whole day in the booth perfecting it. I was in a fantastic mood and practically skipped out of there when I was done!
Constance Wu has appeared in many popular films and TV series lately, but she’s particularly celebrated for her award-winning performance in The Penguin. Many fans don’t realize she’s also a talented singer, having performed in the Broadway production of Once and released her own music. She’s said that voicing an animated character was a dream role, and you can hear her incredible work in the newest Netflix release coming in 2025.

But, It’s Pretty Wild They Never Actually Recorded Together
Although they perform a duet for In Your Dreams, Cristin Milioti and Ken Liu revealed they recorded their parts separately and never sang together in person. Milioti also shared that…
I often wanted to use props or setups Simu had arranged for scenes. However, when I’d return to the set after a couple of months, the scene would be completely different. It ended up being confusing, and it was usually just me and Alex Woo working on it.
While Simu Liu is best known as an actor, especially for his upcoming superhero roles, he’s also demonstrated his singing talent. He notably impressed on the show That’s My Jam with a performance of “In Da Club,” and has showcased his vocal abilities in other instances. According to the cast, they hadn’t known each other long and frequently rehearsed lines with the writer and director, Alex Woo, while recording. As Liu explained:
Alex often took the lead and offered a lot of advice, sometimes coming across as overly critical or controlling. He frequently told you what needed to be done, pushing you to be realistic. It’s hard to say if Cristin would approach things the same way – she might be different.
These days, it’s typical for voice actors in animated films to record their parts separately, and Simu Liu and Cristin Milioti worked on In Your Dreams for years before it finally came out. You can hear them in In Your Dreams when it’s released on Netflix this Friday, November 14th. In the meantime, you can watch the trailer.
