Jennifer Lawrence was once incredibly famous, appearing in many popular movies. However, she unexpectedly took a year-long break from acting. She explained that she needed to step away because she felt her work wasn’t resonating with audiences, and she wasn’t happy with where her career was going. She needed time to re-evaluate things and gain some perspective.
The break came after the release of several weaker films – Passengers, Red Sparrow, and Dark Phoenix.
The actress considers Passengers a low point in her career. Looking back, she confessed she shouldn’t have done a science fiction film where her character is accidentally woken up 90 years before reaching her destination-a colony 60 light-years away from Earth.
However, before starring in the movie, Jennifer Lawrence received advice from her friend Adele to decline the role. Later, she confessed that Adele was correct in her assessment (according to Sensacine).
Adele advised me against it! She compared space movies to the vampire movie craze of the past, saying, “I feel like space movies are the new vampire movies.” Looking back, I realize I should have taken her advice.
I thought Passengers could have been a really cool psychological thriller, but they messed up by making Chris Pratt’s character – the guy who selfishly woke Jennifer Lawrence’s character up early – a love interest. It turned what could have been a really tense story into just a sad romance. Honestly, it felt like a missed opportunity.
Passengers received largely negative reviews, earning a positive rating from only 30% of critics on Rotten Tomatoes. While this wasn’t one of Lawrence’s strongest projects, her recent work has been better received, suggesting a positive trend in her career.
Die My Love, scheduled for release in theaters this November, has received a positive recommendation from 78% of critics, according to Rotten Tomatoes.
