It seems unlikely we’ll ever see a film called 28 Months Later. The writer, Alex Garland, and director, Danny Boyle, have both indicated they’ve moved past the concept.
Despite the upcoming sequel to 28 Years Later, called The Bone Temple, I still hold out hope for the missing installment. Honestly, it’s more about what I want to believe. I enjoyed 28 Years Later and am excited for the new movie, but the jump from Days and Weeks straight to YEARS just feels off to me, and I doubt that feeling will ever change.
So, here’s why I still greatly desire 28 Months Later…even though I’ll probably never get my wish.

28 Years Later Opened Up A Lot Of Questions Regarding What Happened Following Weeks
I really enjoyed 28 Years Later, one of our top movies of 2025, but it ended with a lot of unanswered questions. While I expect some of those questions will be addressed in the next movie, I’d actually love to see a prequel that explores the story further.
It’s interesting how the Rage virus was defeated in some European areas, but not everywhere. Also, the fact that social media is still around in the later films raises questions. I’m curious to know how the world managed to rebuild after the events of 28 Weeks Later – a film I think is often overlooked – to the point where people are using social media and generally acting like the infected threat is gone, when it clearly isn’t.
The film Weeks demonstrates that the virus spread rapidly, showing how NATO drew the U.S. into the crisis while existing systems began to fail. By the end of Weeks, the virus has reached Paris. However, Years suggests a return to global calm, with the primary concern now focused on the British Isles.
I’m really trying to understand the timeline. How did the Rage virus spread across England in just weeks, but then take years to contain? It feels like if we had information from just a few months ago, things would be much clearer… if we could ever get our hands on it.

I’d Still Love To See How The Rest Of The World Responded To The Rage Virus
As we briefly discussed, the virus appears in Paris at the end of 28 Weeks Later, but that’s the only time we see it there. Later, in 28 Years Later, we learn that people infected with the Rage virus can’t cross water—except for Alphas, who I’ll explain shortly. This suggests that those infected would be contained within Europe.
I’m a huge fan of the 28 films, even though they mostly stay focused on Europe – Weeks felt a bit strange bringing in the US. But if they ever made Months, I’d really love to see the scope expand. Even just exploring how countries like Italy or Spain would deal with the Rage virus would be fascinating. I know it’s not World War Z – and that movie really diverged from the book! – and these aren’t traditional zombies, but it feels like the rest of the world would be watching what’s happening in Europe very closely. A story showing that global reaction, filling in the gaps, would be incredible.
Honestly, it doesn’t even need to be a movie. I’d be happy with a book or even a comic book. We actually got a 28 Days Later comic from BOOM! Studios that continued the story after the first film, focusing on the character Selena, and it really added a lot to the series’ universe.
I’d be perfectly happy if someone turned Months into a book or comic series, to be honest. Jumping from Weeks to Years feels like a large gap, and I think there’s room for a story in between – at least, that’s my opinion.

I Like The Concept Of The Original Sequence Of Days, Weeks, Months, Then Years
When I first learned the idea was to follow a timeline of Days, Weeks, Months, and then Years, I immediately started imagining all the possibilities. I’m a big fan of George A. Romero’s zombie films, especially the original three – Night, Dawn, and Day of the Dead – because they show how the zombie apocalypse unfolds and progresses over time.
Films like 28 Days Later and Weeks felt connected, but Years feels completely different. I realize that disconnect was intentional, but it still stands out.
A compelling moment happens when Spike, who has lived his whole life in isolation, doesn’t recognize a cell phone shown to him by a Swedish soldier. He’s completely unfamiliar with soldiers and the idea of a world without the Rage virus, and I found that particularly impactful. Overall, I really enjoyed 28 Years Later – I think it’s the strongest film in the series.
Look, I really wanted to love this series, but it just doesn’t quite hang together the way the original Romero films – Night, Dawn, and Day – did, even though those weren’t directly linked. I think the biggest issue is the jump forward in time with Months that we don’t get here. And honestly, knowing we’re getting a whole trilogy focused on Years without seeing what happened in between feels… frustrating. It feels so disconnected from the established lore. Maybe it’s just me, but it really bothers me that there’s this missing piece!

I Would Like To Learn More About The Alpha Mutation
28 Years Later is a genuinely scary movie, and a big reason why is the Alpha Mutation. This transformation turns some of the infected into huge, powerful, and intimidating creatures.
Aside from Ralph Fiennes’s rather reserved, but quirky, doctor and the strange scene with the killers in tracksuits, I found the new Alphas to be the most compelling part of the series. I think a film set between the ‘Weeks’ and ‘Years’ storylines could have explored how such a significant mutation developed.
I’ll be honest, part of what makes them so interesting is that they have a sense of mystery. I don’t necessarily want all the details of how they were made to be known, though.
However, if we find out more about these characters in future installments, it might actually slow the story down instead of introducing fresh concepts. A prequel would be a much better way to explore their backgrounds and develop them further. Plus…

I Really Just Like Prequels, And This Could Be An Interesting One
To be honest, I’m a big fan of prequel stories. Writing about the best ones got me thinking about how great it would be to see a prequel to 28 Years Later. I think prequels add to a story, instead of detracting from it.
I’d be thrilled to see Months happen, even if it’s released after the Years trilogy. Just getting it in any capacity would be great.
Great prequels have the unique ability to expand on a story’s history and world-building in ways sequels simply can’t, and that’s why I’m hoping we get one, even though it’s unlikely.
Would you also like to see 28 Months Later become a reality? I’d love to hear your thoughts.
