“I Knew He Didn’t Want Me.” Michelle Pfeiffer's Fight for a Role in Scarface Led to Al Pacino Bleeding. Actor Didn't Want Her in the Movie

As a fan of cinematic history, I can’t help but be captivated by the tale of Michelle Pfeiffer and her journey to land the role of Elvira Hancock in Scarface. Al Pacino, a formidable force in his own right, was initially skeptical about her casting as his on-screen love. Yet, the tenacity and talent that this young actress possessed were nothing short of extraordinary.

Scarface holds a legendary status as a movie, with Al Pacino’s performance becoming iconic over time. However, it’s important to note that he wasn’t the only shining star in this production. Michelle Pfeiffer, who was not yet a globally recognized actress at the time, also played a significant role. Interestingly, Pacino had reservations about her being cast in this film, and initially didn’t want her to portray his on-screen lover.

The actress returned to those memories on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

Back in those days, his intensity level appeared to be much higher… It could have been due to the demanding nature of the role he was casting, and perhaps he wasn’t keen on having me for it. The audition process was prolonged and exhausting, lasting roughly two to three months. I was young and petrified during that time, knowing he didn’t favor my casting. As the process continued, my fear grew stronger.

Despite being in a challenging situation, perhaps exacerbated by her past performance in ‘Grease 2’, Pfeiffer persevered and pursued the role in ‘Scarface’. Her determination was to demonstrate to doubters that she was capable of playing Elvira Hancock convincingly.

Despite being turned down initially, her Scarface journey didn’t conclude for the artist. When she believed the battle was over and even experienced a sense of relief, she received a call a month later, inviting her to an audition. Pfeiffer felt ambivalent about this, but reasoned that things couldn’t get much worse since she had been rejected before.

Michelle Pfeiffer delivered an exceptional performance during the screen test that ultimately landed her the role opposite Al Pacino in Scarface, as she brought a fresh energy to her portrayal compared to what she displayed during the auditions.

As a fan, I’d rephrase it like this: It surprisingly liberated me, and for once, fear didn’t grip me. In that moment, we enacted the climactic restaurant scene where I, unexpectedly, lost control. Plates flew, shattering into pieces, and chaos ensued. I was living the part to the fullest, with blood spattering everywhere.

Upon seeing me, people rush towards me, examining if I’m injured, but they can’t find any wounds on me. I then approach Al Pacino, who is bleeding… That’s how I managed to secure the role.

Despite initial reservations, it turned out that Pfeiffer’s struggles eventually paid off, leaving everyone amazed and confirming that the part of Elvira belonged to her. And considering her acting in Scarface, it is evident that she was an excellent selection for this role.
