It’s interesting that Tom Holland’s Spider-Man is still a major part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with his next film, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, coming out in 2026, but he rarely appears in Marvel comics. He’s only been featured in comic adaptations of Captain America: Civil War, Spider-Man: Homecoming, and Avengers: Infinity War. This is due to the complex agreement about Spider-Man’s media rights, which are shared between Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios, and it limits how he can be used. However, Dan Slott, a Spider-Man writer since 2007, recently revealed a clever way he managed to include Holland’s version of Peter Parker in the comics.
Dan Slott is known for his work on Spider-Man, including writing the 2014 Spider-Verse event that served as the basis for the popular animated Spider-Man films, and its sequel, End of the Spider-Verse (2022-2023). He recently revealed on Threads that there were specific rules he had to follow while writing these stories.
I wasn’t able to include the Spider-Man versions from the Sony movies in my first Spider-Verse story or its sequel, End of the Spider-Verse. However, we found a way to feature one of them – we got permission to use the Spider-Man character from the Web-Slingers Ride at Disney’s Avengers Campus, and that version is technically the Tom Holland Spider-Man.

Filming has wrapped on the new Spider-Man movie starring Tom Holland, and the director shared a heartfelt message about finishing the project.
Jon Watts, who directed the Spider-Man movies starring Tom Holland in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, shared his feelings about watching Holland in the upcoming ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ film. He anticipates a unique experience, likely a mix of pride and letting go, as he’s no longer at the helm of the series.
It took some creative maneuvering to get all the Spider-Men together! After being unable to use Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man in the first Spider-Verse story, Tom Holland’s Spider-Man was also excluded when Dan Slott returned to write End of the Spider-Verse. (Christos Gage’s Spider-Geddon came in between these two stories in 2018.) This restriction only applied to the movie version of Holland’s Peter Parker, however. The Spider-Man featured in the Web Slingers ride at Disneyland’s Avengers Campus exists in a separate reality from the main Marvel Cinematic Universe, so he wasn’t affected. Holland actually played the role for that attraction as well, creating a connection between the ride and the films.
I appreciate Dan Slott’s clever and detailed approach. However, using this particular version of the character came with a restriction, and Marvel editors rejected his plan to include a subtle reference to the actor. The writer then explained:
I had this idea for a comic panel where Spider-Man was rescuing people near the Holland Tunnel, and I thought it would be hilarious to frame it so the sign only read “Holland T” with Spidey’s head covering the rest. I mean, it’s Tom Holland as Spider-Man, right? But Marvel quickly shut that down! They said absolutely no way, ever. I was a little bummed, but hey, you can’t always get what you want! 😛
It makes sense we didn’t see Tom Holland’s Spider-Man unmasked, as using his image creates difficulties. It’s also not surprising his name couldn’t be mentioned directly, even though the actor probably wouldn’t have minded. This happened before in Spider-Verse; J. Michael Straczynski could only refer to Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield by calling Maguire “the Seabiscuit guy” and Garfield “the Social Network guy.”
Unlike the way DC Comics has recently featured older versions of Batman and Superman in their comics, it’s unlikely we’ll see Tom Holland’s Spider-Man or previous actors who played the role become comic book characters themselves. However, Tom Holland is expected to return as Spider-Man in the movie Spider-Man: Brand New Day on July 31, 2026. Plus, a different version of the MCU’s Spider-Man will appear in the second season of Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, which is planned for release sometime in 2026.
