I Had To Know Why Laurence Fishburne Threw Out An X-Men Character When Asked Which Marvel Character He’d Like To Play

Laurence Fishburne recently shared his desire to portray Professor X in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Knowing Marvel is planning a new X-Men film, he playfully asked fans what they thought of him in the role. I was intrigued by the idea, so during a recent interview, I asked Fishburne why he’s interested in playing the famous Marvel character.

Laurence Fishburne recently shared his interest in playing Professor X, and the internet went wild with the idea. Many, including myself, can easily imagine him leading the X-Men, and I’m eager to see his interpretation of the role. During a recent interview with him for TopMob about his work on The Witcher Season 4, I asked him about his comment and why he was so drawn to the character. Here’s what he told me:

I’ve been a Marvel fan since childhood. As I’ve gotten older, many of the roles I would have wanted to play earlier in my career are no longer a good fit, but Professor X feels like a perfect match. I’d be thrilled to play him if given the chance. Even if that doesn’t happen, I’m still excited to see what Marvel does next.

Honestly, Marvel, I completely agree with that assessment! It just feels right, and I really think we should explore making it happen. He’s the perfect age, clearly has the enthusiasm, and looks the part, but what really strikes me is that he’s got exactly the right energy and presence to embody Charles Xavier. I can really see it!

It’s true that Laurence Fishburne has already been in the Marvel Cinematic Universe – he played Goliath in Ant-Man and the Wasp, which you can watch on Disney+. Plus, Patrick Stewart is joining the cast of Avengers: Doomsday, and we’ll see him as Charles Xavier when that movie comes out next year. So, at first glance, Laurence Fishburne’s recent hope of being in a Marvel project might seem unlikely.

Disney+ offers access to all the Marvel movies, with plans starting at $11.99 a month for an ad-supported option. See the deal here.

Just because something hasn’t happened before doesn’t make it impossible. For example, Chris Evans played the Human Torch in Fantastic Four before becoming Captain America, and recently returned to the role in Deadpool and Wolverine, which is part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Michelle Yeoh also played different characters in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Because of this, it’s certainly possible Laurence Fishburne could appear as another character in the MCU after being involved with the Ant-Man story.

Plus, we don’t yet know who will star in Jake Schreier’s X-Men movie. Although several of the original X-Men actors are expected to appear in Avengers: Doomsday, a completely new cast could be chosen for a separate X-Men film. Honestly, with the multiverse, anything can happen!

It seems Laurence Fishburne is hoping to become the next Professor X, and many fans agree he’d be a great fit – he clearly loves Marvel and the character. Whether it will happen remains to be seen, but in the meantime, you can catch him in Season 4 of The Witcher on Netflix, starting October 30th.
