It’s amazing that the Hulk appears in four out of the five highest-grossing Marvel Cinematic Universe films, even though Marvel has focused less on him as a main character for the last ten to twenty years. Unlike most other key MCU heroes, the Hulk’s journey within the franchise has been quite unique, despite getting some significant screen time since the beginning.
Even though the Hulk was a central figure in the beginning of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and a founding member of the Avengers, he hasn’t gotten his own dedicated movie series. Interestingly, he’s still been part of several successful films, which actually emphasizes how much untapped potential this major Marvel character has.
The Hulk Is In Every One Of The MCU’s Top 5 Movies Other Than Spider-Man: No Way Home
I’ve always been fascinated by the Hulk! It’s kind of amazing when you think about it – even though his first solo movie didn’t do incredibly well at the box office, the Hulk – or rather, Bruce Banner – has been a key player in almost all of Marvel’s biggest hits. It’s wild that a character with only one dedicated story has been so central to everything!
Throughout his 13 years in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the Hulk has been a major force in the top-performing Avengers films – The Avengers, Age of Ultron, Infinity War, and Endgame – collectively earning $7.5 billion at the box office. He’s appeared in every one of the MCU’s five highest-grossing movies except for Spider-Man: No Way Home. However, Hulk and Spider-Man are expected to team up in the next Spider-Man film, Brand New Day.
The fact that the Hulk has appeared in so many blockbuster movies earning over $1 billion, yet hasn’t starred in a successful solo film, really shows how dominant the Avengers movies have been. It also emphasizes a lost opportunity for Marvel – they haven’t capitalized on the Hulk’s potential, despite many of their biggest films building up his story and proving there’s strong audience interest.
The Hulk’s MCU Movie Track Record Makes The Hero’s Movie Journey Feel Even Wilder
Given the Hulk’s somewhat rocky history in Marvel movies – complicated by rights issues and inconsistent box office success – it’s easy to see why the MCU hasn’t made many solo Hulk films.
Despite the Hulk’s popularity in comics and movies, the idea of another solo film for him feels strange. Considering his important role in so many major Marvel Cinematic Universe movies, and the groundwork laid for a standalone story, it’s surprising one never materialized. There were plenty of Hulk comics that could have been adapted into a film, and after years of building the character within the MCU, audiences were primed and ready to see it.
With Robert Downey Jr. reprising his role in Avengers: Doomsday, it’s clear Marvel is looking to its original Avengers films for future success. This makes you wonder if they’ll eventually build another solo Hulk movie. However, for now, the Hulk’s story appears to be continuing through team-up movies.
