I Can’t Believe A Chris Pine Comment May Have Borked Noah Hawley’s Star Trek Movie

It’s been quite a while since a Star Trek movie was released in cinemas, despite many attempts to make one. Over the past ten years, Paramount Pictures started several projects that didn’t pan out. When they finally seemed ready to go in 2025, Section 31 premiered on Paramount+ instead. A movie directed by Noah Hawley also came close to being made, but a remark about Chris Pine potentially caused it to fall through.

Josh Hawley recently gained attention with his new show, Alien: Earth, which premiered on FX. I previously wrote about my disappointment that his planned Star Trek movie never came to fruition. Now, in a new interview with the SFF Gazette, he’s revealed just how far along the project was before it was ultimately cancelled.

After working on ‘Lucy in the Sky,’ I realized I enjoyed making movies and wanted to take on a larger project. I pitched an original idea to Paramount, and they loved it. We started preparing to film, even before Chris Pine was involved.

It’s really strange revisiting the details of this project now that it’s been cancelled. And honestly, it stings a bit as a fan. I was so excited about what Noah Hawley could have done with a Star Trek movie – especially after how much I loved Alien: Earth. I truly believed he would have knocked it out of the park.

Noah Hawley’s proposed Star Trek movie actually made significant progress. He shared that he was scouting filming locations when a shift in leadership at the studio unexpectedly stopped the project in its tracks.

I was actually getting ready to move to Australia – we were even booking venues! Then, like so often happens in Hollywood, the studio head at the time, Jim Gianopulos, decided to bring in a new executive who would run things. The very first thing this new person did was cancel the ‘Star Trek’ movie we were working on. Their reasoning? They weren’t sure anyone would even like it!

I think comments like these really explain why the fourth Star Trek movie faced so many delays. It’s clear Paramount has been hesitant to bring the franchise back to the big screen, even though people have tried multiple times to make it happen. I remember they even started working on a completely different origin story after Noah Hawley’s idea didn’t move forward, but we haven’t gotten any real news about that one in ages.

Currently, Paramount Skydance has hired John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein to write a new Star Trek film that won’t connect to any of the existing series or movies. Interestingly, Noah Hawley suggested that a comment about Chris Pine may have been a factor in his own Trek movie being cancelled.

Someone suggested making a transitional film featuring Chris Pine and his established cast, just to be cautious, but the idea was eventually dropped.

It’s incredibly frustrating to hear that Paramount passed on Noah Hawley’s Star Trek idea. I would have loved to see his vision come to life, and now, after six years, they’re finally pursuing a similar concept he originally proposed.

I’m Excited About The Latest Star Trek Movie News, But Have One Big Request As A Longtime Fan

As a big Star Trek fan, I really held onto hope for years that Chris Pine and the whole crew from the Kelvin timeline would reunite for a fourth movie. But looking at everyone’s schedules now, it seems really tough. Chris Pine is super busy, Zoë Saldana’s got an Avatar film coming out, Zachary Quinto is working on Brilliant Minds for NBC, Karl Urban is finishing up The Boys, and Simon Pegg is juggling tons of projects. It’s just hard to see how they’d all find the time now.

As a lifelong Trek fan, I totally get why Paramount and Skydance decided to shelve the idea of another Kelvin timeline movie. Trying to coordinate all those actors’ schedules must have been a nightmare. It’s a shame, especially since Noah Hawley had a script ready to go and everything was set up in Australia, but you can’t dwell on what might have been – even in the world of Star Trek, you can’t unspill the replicator’s milk!

Paramount+ offers a variety of Star Trek movies and shows, with plans starting at $7.99 per month or $59.99 per year. You can choose between the Essential plan (with ads) at $7.99/month and the ad-free Premium plan at $12.99/month. For the best value, consider an annual subscription to save money while enjoying everything Paramount+ has to offer.

I’m hoping we’ll see a new Star Trek movie being filmed by the end of 2026, or at least have a firm production start date announced. News like this makes me a little worried about the future of Star Trek movies in theaters, but hopefully, this time things will work out and we’ll finally get a new film!
