So far, “Sinners” is my top movie of the year. Directed by Ryan Coogler, this film was a surprisingly great watch for someone who doesn’t usually enjoy horror. I truly loved everything about it, and I’m puzzled why it wasn’t released closer to Halloween – the typical time for spooky movies. I think there are two good reasons why a fall release would have been better.
People Love A Great Horror Movie Around Halloween
While *Sinners* isn’t a typical Halloween-themed horror film, it’s easily the scariest movie I’ve seen all year, and that’s saying something given how many good horror movies have come out recently. I also really enjoyed *Weapons* and *28 Years Later*. It makes me wonder why those weren’t released closer to Halloween, especially *Weapons*! Still, *Sinners* feels like the perfect movie to watch as the days get shorter and the nights get longer – prime time for vampires, wouldn’t you say?
September has been unusually slow for new movie releases. Surprisingly, an anime film is currently leading at the box office – it wasn’t expected by many, including us. A big release, like a film directed by Ryan Coogler and starring Michael B. Jordan, would have been a great addition to the month. Releasing a horror movie now is always a good strategy, but especially one like *Sinners*, because it could also be a contender for awards.

This Is Also The Time Of Year That Awards Favorites Get Released
As autumn arrives and everyone enjoys spooky movies, it also kicks off awards season. The recent Emmys were a highlight, and now we’ll start seeing the films studios hope will win big awards like the Oscars and Golden Globes, with the ceremonies happening in early 2026.
Only one horror movie, *The Silence of the Lambs* (and even that’s debatable), has ever won Best Picture. However, *Sinners* might be the film to finally break that barrier this year. It’s too soon to predict winners, but *Sinners* is almost guaranteed a nomination and a serious chance at winning. The film’s late-year release – a common strategy for studios hoping to keep a movie fresh in voters’ minds – could be key to achieving that historic win for the horror genre. Despite being released last winter, *Sinners* is already generating a lot of Oscar buzz.
There are lots of movies coming out in 2025, but I doubt any of them will impress me as much as *Sinners* did. I really, really loved that movie!
