The main developer of Hytale said it was incredibly lucky they were able to save the game after facing significant challenges.
I first heard about Hytale back in 2018, and it instantly caught my attention! It’s a sandbox RPG kind of like Minecraft, but it really stood out because of how much it focuses on surviving, going on adventures, and letting you build anything you can imagine. It blew up pretty quickly – everyone was talking about it!
The game was originally created by Hypixel Studios and received significant support when Riot Games, the creators of League of Legends, bought the studio in 2020. However, after several years of setbacks and changes to its plans, the project was ultimately cancelled, and Hypixel Studios closed its doors in 2023.
Simon Collins-Laflamme, a director on Hytale, says getting the game back into development after regaining control went quicker than they thought. However, he emphasizes that it’s been a challenging process to get things moving again.
Hytale lead says salvaging Hytale was a “miracle”
Simon Collins-Laflamme, the founder of Hypixel, explained on Twitter on December 30th how difficult it was to save the project from failing. He shared his feelings about bringing it back from near collapse.
We expected it to take years to get the game working properly, but we managed to make it playable and enjoyable in just a few weeks. Now, instead of taking a break or releasing the game, we have to work hard for years to catch up for lost time, he explained.
I often get asked how I feel about the progress on Hytale and getting closer to launch. To be honest, my main feeling is frustration. While the game has incredible potential, for the past four years, our team has been focused on completely rebuilding the game’s engine instead of developing the actual gameplay. This has left us with…

We were incredibly lucky to be able to fix Hytale. It was in terrible shape – almost unplayable. All the core elements were malfunctioning, including the camera, movement, combat, crafting, building systems, the overall game flow, sound, and how everything was displayed on screen. Honestly, everything needed to be reworked.
Hytale is scheduled to launch into early access on January 13, 2026. The developers are prioritizing solid gameplay and regaining player trust over quickly releasing the complete game, according to Collins-Laflamme.
