Tomorrow, you’ll get the chance to dive into the randomly generated landscapes of “Hyper Light Breaker“, the latest creation from Heart Machine, known for games like “Hyper Light Drifter” and “Solar Ash”. Interestingly, “Breaker” is set in the same universe as the 2016 blockbuster hit, “Hyper Light Drifter”, which helped put Heart Machine on the gaming map. This new installment unfolds events that happened decades before the original, delving into the enigmas of an ancient, nearly forgotten territory called the Overgrowth. Furthermore, it transitions to a 3D environment and offers cooperative play as an option. You can choose to explore alone or with the assistance of up to two other players. Your mission is to piece together scattered memories and collect resources to expand your settlement. Employ a blend of close-combat melee, ranged weaponry, and special skills to combat adversaries, including formidable bosses called Crowns.
As I geared up to explore the dynamic landscapes of Overgrowth, I was tasked with picking a character and crafting my loadout first.Hyper Light Breaker offers three playable characters initially, with additional ones joining the fray during Early Access. My arsenal consisted of a melee weapon, a ranged weapon, and a unique skill. The one that really caught my eye was the power to conjure a colossal treelike golem as an ally in battle. With just an hour to familiarize myself with the controls, having this fighting companion was a lifesaver. To top it off, I had the good fortune of being guided by none other than Alx Preston, Heart Machine’s Founder, and Brad Crespo from Arc Games throughout my experience. A big thank you goes out to both for walking me through this exciting journey!
The outpost functions as a central hub where players engage with diverse characters and businesses. Here, you can purchase new weapons, equipment, skills, and recover fragmented recollections from the Overgrowth. I’m intrigued to witness how this hub evolves alongside resources gathered during expeditions, and what fresh characters and establishments will become accessible. However, the most captivating aspect of the outpost lies in uncovering the forgotten memories. These snippets of history are akin to a comic strip or storyboard, offering intricate artwork and additional insights into various characters and the world at large. This is an area I look forward to delving deeper into.
Delving into the Overgrowth kicks off the thrilling adventure! Each biome is dynamically created and open-ended, with the Crown as the final objective. Various creatures inhabit this world, yet players must seek out and conquer three elite monsters to gain entry to the Crown. Navigation is made more exciting with hoverboards, gliders, and jump pads for reaching high structures. However, these biomes won’t last indefinitely; players can always retreat to the outpost when needed. Defeat by a monster is one possibility, but there are also specific locations on the map that teleport you back. Activating a teleportation spot initiates a kind of combat arena where your team must battle waves of enemies and emerge victorious to return to the outpost. While players can revisit the same procedurally generated biome multiple times, eventually it will disappear permanently.
Previously, I’ve dabbled in playing Hyper Light Breaker; during the Summer Game Fest last summer, I had the opportunity to try out a single-player version. If you’re curious about my thoughts from back then, you can find them here. This previous experience was beneficial as the more recent preview introduced captivating mechanics like the cage match, jump pads, and a wider variety of intriguing loot and abilities. However, what stands out the most is that I am excited for the Early Access launch tomorrow because Hyper Light Breaker seems promising, offering an enjoyable gaming experience whether solo or with a group of friends.
As an eager admirer, I can’t help but express my gratitude towards Heart Machine and Arc Games for granting me the privilege to get a sneak peek at this thrilling game. Hyper Light Breaker, set to leap into Early Access on January 14th, 2025, will be available on PC through Steam.
