A Turkish court ruled that a man’s act of saving his ex-wife’s contact name as ‘Chubby’ constituted emotional abuse, setting a new legal standard in divorce cases. This is the first time such a reason has been cited in a Turkish divorce ruling.
Nicknames are often used as terms of endearment between people who care for each other. However, a man in Turkey recently called his wife a name that was clearly meant to be hurtful, and it’s now getting a lot of attention online.
A divorce case originally handled by a local court in Usak, Turkey, reached the country’s highest court, the Supreme Court of Appeals, in October 2025.
In a recent divorce case, both spouses wanted to end their marriage. The wife alleged that her husband had repeatedly sent her hurtful text messages. News reports included examples of these messages, such as “Get lost, I don’t want to see your face,” and “Let the devil see your face.”

Furthermore, the court discovered he had saved her contact in his phone as ‘Tombik,’ a Turkish term meaning “chubby.” Considering this evidence, the local court convicted him of emotional abuse, a decision that was later confirmed by Turkey’s Supreme Court of Appeals.
The Supreme Court ruled that putting down, ridiculing, or being unkind to your spouse goes against the commitment to respect the marriage and is considered a marital fault.
“Even when you save your spouse’s name in your contacts, do not exceed the limit of respect.”
Man’s contact name for wife turns costly in viral divorce
Turkish courts have always accepted texts and social media posts as evidence. However, a recent divorce case has established a new legal standard, ruling that the names saved in a person’s contacts can also be used as evidence in court.
According to a report from Memur Hukuk, Turkish law requires married couples to be loyal, respectful, and understanding towards one another. A recent decision clarifies that this expectation now extends to their private conversations and messages, not just their words or actions in person.

After his wife filed for divorce and claimed he was unfaithful, the husband filed his own lawsuit. But the court didn’t find enough proof to support his claims, and instead ordered him to pay more in both child support and alimony.
A recently married couple in India became the latest viral story when they sought family counseling because their cat and dog were constantly fighting.
