As a big movie fan, I was really surprised to hear Josh Hutcherson, who I remember so well as Peeta in The Hunger Games, talk about what happened after the films. He became famous overnight when those movies blew up, but it sounds like it wasn’t all sunshine and roses for him. He’s said that following The Hunger Games, he mostly experienced a string of “disappointment, failure, and rejection,” which is honestly pretty shocking to hear.
Josh Hutcherson is experiencing a career resurgence, with recent roles in films like Five Nights at Freddy’s and The Beekeeper. He’s also expanded into television with the HBO comedy I Love LA. Hutcherson recently discussed his career journey, including both successes and challenges, and his work on Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 during an appearance on the Dinner’s on Me with Jesse Tyler Ferguson podcast.
The Hunger Games films were incredibly important in shaping Hutcherson’s career. He explains that from age nine to 24, he only experienced success, and the franchise essentially launched him into that trajectory. Hutcherson considers the action series to be the high point of his career, giving him the opportunity to work with some of Hollywood’s biggest names.
The entertainment industry can be really deceptive. They make it seem like you’ve instantly achieved everything – landing roles with huge stars like Jennifer Lawrence and Philip Seymour Hoffman, being a key part of a blockbuster film, and having endless opportunities. But that impression is completely false.
Despite the huge success of the film series, Hutcherson struggled with constant rejection after it finished. He realized starting his career at a young age had given him an unrealistic view of the industry, as he mistakenly believed he would be cast in roles easily.
It’s a strange situation – people are eager to showcase you, but then seem unwilling to offer further support. That’s when I first experienced feelings of disappointment, failure, and rejection, around the age of 24 or 25.
It felt awful – a constant cycle of applying for roles, auditioning, and then facing nothing but rejection. For years, I’d always landed the parts I auditioned for, ever since I was a child, so I assumed that would continue. I was used to success, but suddenly that wasn’t the case at all. It was a harsh and unexpected lesson about how things really work in this industry.
Will Josh Hutcherson Return in the New ‘Hunger Games’ Movie?

Lionsgate
Be warned: this contains spoilers for The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping. Josh Hutcherson played Peeta Mellark in all four Hunger Games movies, from 2012 to 2015. Peeta is a key character and a fan favorite, so it’s natural to wonder if Hutcherson might return to the role in the newer prequel films, The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes and Sunrise on the Reaping.
Since the new Hunger Games prequel is set long before the original movies, it wouldn’t make sense for Josh Hutcherson to reprise his role. The film, The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, is scheduled for release in November 2026. While his character, Peeta, appears briefly in the book’s ending, it’s currently unknown if Hutcherson will be involved in the prequel adaptation. Whether he’ll return remains to be seen.
