The trailer for episode 7 of ‘IT: Welcome to Derry‘ shows how the show’s main villains came to be. This HBO horror series is set in the world of Stephen King’s ‘IT,’ and goes back to 1962. The series tells the story of what happened in Derry before the events of the famous novel and movies.
Pennywise continues to terrorize children in this new installment, with a fresh young cast including Matilda Lawler, Clara Stack, Amanda Christine, and Blake Cameron James. Bill Skarsgård returns to play the iconic, terrifying clown that everyone knows.
HBO Max has released a trailer for the seventh episode of IT: Welcome to Derry. The short clip suggests this episode will explore Pennywise’s origins and past in more detail than we’ve seen so far.
I remember when Pennywise first appears – it’s at a carnival, and he’s presented as this seemingly harmless “dancing clown.” The way they cut between scenes is really effective – you get glimpses of Dick Halloran looking worried, an angry crowd forming, and then you see both the young and older versions of the clown, which is unsettling. It immediately sets a creepy tone.
The new series, IT: Welcome to Derry, has presented a complex portrayal of Pennywise. The show has built up the reveal of the clown slowly, only hinting at his presence through shadows and a brief image at the close of the third episode.
The fourth episode offered a slightly longer look at Pennywise at the end, but mainly explored the history of Derry and showed the clown less often. It wasn’t until the fifth episode, “Welcome to Derry,” that viewers really got a good look at Bill Skarsgård reprising his role.
The new trailer shows the series is finally addressing what it previously avoided. It will now delve into Pennywise’s history and his connection to the town of Derry, giving these elements the attention they deserve.
The trailer gives a lot of focus to Dick Hallorann, who seems to be a key character in the upcoming Welcome to Derry. Originally appearing in Stephen King’s The Shining, Dick Hallorann has special, psychic abilities – similar to Danny Torrance – that let him foresee future events.
Okay, so I have to say, bringing Dick Hallorann into the mix on IT: Welcome to Derry was a brilliant move. It really grounds the show in the wider Stephen King universe in a way the IT movies just didn’t manage. Dedicating an episode to Pennywise’s origins through Hallorann’s eyes allows the showrunners to build some genuinely fascinating backstory and lore as the season progresses, and I’m excited to see where they take it.
