Hulu’s Underrated Hard Sci-Fi Cyberpunk Series ‘Heavenly Delusion’ Is a 10/10 Masterpiece

Popular sci-fi shows like The X-Files, The Twilight Zone, Firefly, Doctor Who, and Star Trek have always been well-known. More recently, shows like The Expanse, Andor, For All Mankind, Severance, and Fallout have become modern favorites. However, the sci-fi genre has many lesser-known shows that are just as good, and one of the best realistic sci-fi series ever made is currently available on Hulu.

You can easily finish the sci-fi series Heavenly Delusion (originally Tengoku Daimakyou) in a single weekend—or even a day if you have the time! Based on the manga by Masakazu Ishiguro and animated by the studio behind FLCL (Production I.G.), it’s a show you won’t want to miss. Start streaming it on Hulu tonight!

This series takes place far in the future, after a devastating event has left most of humanity gone. The few remaining people are struggling to survive on a ruined Earth. The story centers on two different groups: a community of children raised in a high-tech, futuristic research center, and a pair of wanderers searching for a legendary place called “heaven.” Their journey is fraught with danger, as they face terrifying monsters and other desperate humans who have lost their way. The catch? They don’t even know if “heaven” exists, or where to find it.

‘Heavenly Delusion’ Hooks You From the First Episode

The anime Heavenly Delusion starts strong with a fantastic first episode. It quickly establishes two main storylines: one following children living in a research facility and another focusing on two people trying to survive in a world above ground. While the children are clearly gifted, the episode hints at something unsettling about their abilities and the strict rules imposed on them by the adults overseeing the facility.

Meanwhile, the two survivors are quickly opposed by a group of bandits. As well as highlighting the insane animation by Production I.G., the action scene also shows off one of the coolest guns in modern sci-fi, the A-mk3, also known as the Kiru Beam. The battery-operated (even in the post-apocalypse, people are still environmentally conscious) laser beam can melt through absolutely anything, and is the reason the two survivors have lasted so long on their mission to find “heaven.”

‘Heavenly Delusion’ Is an Incredibly Complex and Intelligent Sci-Fi Series

Lots of shows try to be science fiction by simply adding lasers and robots, but the truly great ones use futuristic settings to tell compelling stories. Heavenly Delusion is one of those shows. It’s more than just action with a sci-fi coating; the central mystery about ‘heaven’ cleverly links the different storylines, and the show creates a detailed, believable, and captivating world both on the surface and underground. Even if you don’t usually watch anime, sci-fi fans shouldn’t miss Heavenly Delusion.
