Hulu’s 2-Part Historical Crime Series Dominates Streaming Worldwide As New Episodes Finally Release

After a two-year wait, Hulu’s historical crime series, The Artful Dodger, is now a hit with viewers around the globe.

The Artful Dodger reimagines the world of Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist, following Jack Dawkins (aka The Artful Dodger) and Fagin as they navigate life in the Australian penal colony of Port Royal. Jack has reinvented himself as a skilled surgeon, but Fagin tries to pull him back into a life of crime – a life Jack secretly enjoys. The series explores their clashing personalities and continued planning of heists.

Season 1 of The Artful Dodger launched in November 2023 to great acclaim, but it wasn’t officially renewed until a year later, in November 2024. Over two years after the first season ended, season 2 is now available. All eight episodes were released simultaneously on Hulu and Disney+ around the world on February 10th. Just three days later, the show has become the most popular series on Disney+ globally.

Since its second season began, The Artful Dodger has become increasingly popular around the world. It debuted in the top five worldwide on February 11th, quickly rising to second place on February 12th, and then reaching the number one spot on February 13th. In the U.S., the series is currently the second most popular show on Disney+, as of February 13th.

Currently, The Artful Dodger is performing slightly below Wonder Man in the US. However, its ranking could still shift over the weekend. Wonder Man premiered over two weeks ago, and The Artful Dodger’s second season has earned an exceptional 100% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes (based on 8 reviews), alongside a 99% audience score.

I’m really hooked on The Artful Dodger! Season 2 picks up a few months after everything that happened last season. It’s all about Fagin trying to help Jack get away with a murder he didn’t commit – they’re saying he killed a pretty harsh police captain named Gaines. But honestly, helping Jack escape might have been a mistake… it’s already looking complicated!

Jack negotiates a parole deal with the new colony Inspector, Henry Boxer (Luke Bracey), but it comes with a painful condition: he’s forbidden from seeing Lady Belle (Maia Mitchell), the governor’s daughter and a fellow medical student. Despite the risk to both their futures, they find it incredibly difficult to resist being together.

Season two of The Artful Dodger will feature returning cast members Brodie-Sangster, Thewlis, Mitchell, and Bracey, alongside new additions Lucy-Rose Leonard as Lady Fanny, Susie Porter as Lady Jane, Damien Garvey as Governor Fox, and Tim Minchin as Darius Cracksworth. Nicholas Burton will play Dr. Sneed, Kim Gygnell is Prof, Luke Carrol is Tim, and Vivienne Awosoga plays Hetty. Rounding out the new cast are Aljin Abella as Flashbang, Brigid Zengeni as Rotty, and Albert Latailakepa as Aputi.

Joining the cast with Bracey are Jeremy Sims, playing Dickie, the governor’s rich and cunning brother, and Zac Burgess (known from Cruel Intentions), as Phineas Golden, a charming man who becomes Fanny’s new romantic interest.

Considering how well The Artful Dodger is doing on streaming platforms and with critics, Hulu and Disney made the right decision to order another season.

All episodes of The Artful Dodger are streaming now on Hulu and Disney+.
