Disney has begun the process of shutting down Hulu, its streaming service that’s been around for over 20 years. The company announced plans to do this by next year, and the changes officially started on October 8th.
Starting October 8th, the Star brand has been removed from all countries outside of the U.S. This is a significant change for viewers of Disney’s international streaming services. Disney is getting rid of the Star brand as part of its plan to combine Hulu and Disney+ completely by 2026.
Disney previously announced that phasing out Star would allow Hulu to become a single, unified app by 2026. Now, Disney says Disney+ users will start noticing Hulu content appearing within the Disney+ app as part of regular updates and improvements to the homepage and other areas.
Disney+ is replacing Star with Hulu in many countries outside the US to help more people around the world become familiar with the Hulu brand. Disney believes Hulu’s wide range of shows and movies will be especially popular with adult viewers. Along with this change, Disney+ is also updating its interface in the coming weeks to make it easier to use, with a cleaner home screen and more personalized recommendations. Disney says these are just the first improvements, and they plan to continue updating the app until a fully combined experience launches next year.
Disney+ Subscribers Recently Got Some Bad News
Disney intends to retire Hulu as a standalone streaming service and app by 2026, moving all its shows and movies to Disney+. While Hulu will disappear as a separate service, Disney has confirmed that some bundled plans will still be available, though these are expected to be more expensive. Disney+ recently announced…
Starting October 21st, prices for several Disney streaming services will be going up. Disney+ will increase by $2, from $9.99 to $11.99 per month. Hulu’s ad-supported plan will also rise by $2, reaching $11.99 monthly, while the ad-free Hulu plan will stay at $18.99. Hulu + Live TV with ads will see a $7 increase, going from $83 to $90 per month. Disney+ Premium (without ads) will go up by $3, from $16 to $19 monthly. Finally, ESPN+, now known as ESPN Select, will increase by $1, from $11.99 to $12.99 per month.
Disney is raising the prices of its U.S. streaming services again this October, marking the third price increase in three years – subscribers also saw increases in October 2023 and 2024. This price hike comes as Disney is also discontinuing the Star streaming service, and follows a recent controversy involving Jimmy Kimmel. Disney-owned ABC temporarily suspended Kimmel after comments he made about the death of conservative podcaster Charlie Kirk, but he was later reinstated and will return to his show on September 23rd.
