Although there was talk of a sequel, a second Real Steel movie hasn’t materialized since the original premiered in 2011, starring a popular Hugh Jackman during his X-Men success. Recently, director Shawn Levy shared disappointing news about Real Steel 2 in an interview.
Hugh Jackman and director Shawn Levy teamed up again for the successful 2024 film Deadpool & Wolverine after previously working on Real Steel. This sparked even more online discussion about a potential Real Steel 2, but Levy recently stated that a sequel is still uncertain.
While promoting the upcoming season of Stranger Things, which he also helps produce, Levy jokingly responded to a persistent question about his film Real Steel. He said, “You’re really determined, and I have a feeling you’ll still be asking me about Real Steel when we’re both much older, which I appreciate!”
He said with disappointment, “I’m really not sure where things stand, and honestly, I don’t think it’s going to work out.”
Fans have been waiting for a sequel to the sci-fi film for over ten years, and information about it has been unclear and constantly changing. Discussions resurfaced in 2022, and recently, in 2024, the director hinted that it’s happening. When asked directly, he jokingly admitted, “Yes,” and revealed he’s already assembled a writing team.
He shared that he’s very passionate about the franchise and was particularly pleased to hear a new interpretation that creatively builds on the movie’s established story. He expressed genuine enthusiasm for the future direction of the project.
Levy explained that it’s difficult to revisit Real Steel because, despite its box office performance, the movie has a very dedicated and passionate fanbase. He doesn’t want to work on a sequel or TV show unless he’s confident he can do the story justice.
He described the project’s current status as uncertain, admitting it probably won’t happen. However, he emphasized a shared and genuine appreciation for the original film, and that he’s prioritizing preserving that positive feeling.
Real Steel Was a Box Office Hit
You know, when Real Steel first came out, critics weren’t exactly blown away – it hovered right around that ‘fresh’ rating with only a 60% score from 231 reviews. But honestly, as a movie fan, I think it’s become a real cult favorite. It did pretty well at the box office, but it’s stuck around in people’s hearts even longer, and audiences clearly loved it more, giving it a solid 73% rating. It’s one of those films that just works despite what the initial reviews said.
The movie Real Steel centers on Charlie Henton, a retired boxer who builds a robot from spare parts, hoping to train it to be a champion with the help of his son, Max. The film was a big hit with audiences, earning nearly $300 million globally on a $110 million budget. Even years after its release, people are still hoping for a sequel.
