Hugh Jackman hasn’t ruled out returning to play Wolverine, and his latest statements are encouraging news for Marvel Cinematic Universe fans.
What is Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine update?
Hugh Jackman originally intended to retire from playing Wolverine after the 2017 film Logan, concluding his almost 20-year portrayal of the character. He recently confirmed this plan during a conversation with Cynthia Erivo for Variety and CNN’s Actors on Actors.
Honestly, after making ‘Logan,’ it truly felt like I was finished with the role. I really needed that film to be something special, and I had to really push to get it made the way I envisioned. I had to firmly tell everyone, ‘This is it, I’m not playing Wolverine again.’
However, Jackman’s plans change after witnessing Ryan Reynolds play the Merc with a Mouth.
When I first saw Deadpool, it reminded me of the movie 48 Hrs., with Eddie Murphy and Nick Nolte. But I’d been telling everyone I was finished with the role. I’m not the type to go back on my word. Then I thought, ‘You know what? I’m changing my mind, and I don’t even feel bad about it.’ It felt really good to just let it happen.
When asked if he was finished playing Wolverine, Jackman responded that it didn’t feel like he was done with the role.
Hugh Jackman isn’t currently planned to be in future Marvel Cinematic Universe films. However, his character, Wolverine, survives the events of ‘Deadpool & Wolverine,’ suggesting he could return. With upcoming ‘Avengers’ movies – ‘Doomsday’ and ‘Secret Wars’ – bringing together a large cast of past and present Marvel characters, rumors indicate Jackman’s Wolverine might appear in one or both of them.
The movie Avengers: Doomsday will be released in theaters on December 18, 2026, and Avengers: Secret Wars will follow on December 17, 2027.
