Hey everyone, great news! The super cool Deluxe Limited Edition of Howl’s Moving Castle is back on Amazon for just $20 – it was $25 before, so that’s a nice discount! I was bummed when it sold out everywhere about a month ago, but it looks like it’s restocked now. And get this – Amazon also has a deal on the new Howl’s Moving Castle trilogy box set – I just snagged mine for $22.38! Thought I’d share in case anyone else was looking for these.
The Deluxe Limited Edition and World of Howl Box Set would be a beautiful addition to any collection alongside the Steelbook Edition of the Studio Ghibli film. While Hayao Miyazaki’s 2004 movie adaptation differs quite a bit from the original book, both the film and the novel are wonderfully enchanting.

Studio Ghibli’s Howl’s Moving Castle Adaptation
As we discussed, the 2004 Studio Ghibli movie took significant liberties with the original book. It had a different visual style, some characters remained on screen for extended periods, and the relationship between Sophie and Howl unfolded in a unique manner.
Looking to own the Studio Ghibli film Howl’s Moving Castle? You can purchase the Limited Edition Steelbook for $18, or the standard edition for $15. Both versions include Blu-ray and DVD copies of the movie, plus extras like storyboards, documentaries, interviews, original promotional content, and an art & commentary booklet. Alternatively, Walmart offers a 2-Film Box Set with Howl’s Moving Castle and Spirited Away for $23 – it includes the standard edition of both films. Howl’s Moving Castle features a fantastic voice cast, including Christian Bale, Jean Simmons, and Billy Crystal.

More Studio Ghibli Movies Based on Novels and Manga
Howl’s Moving Castle, like many Studio Ghibli films, is based on a pre-existing story – a novel, short story, or manga. Here’s a list of other Ghibli adaptations and the books that inspired them. We’ve focused on stories that are easily found in English. We’ve also included a few examples of stories and comics that were created from Ghibli films at the end.
Kiki’s Delivery Service
Originally published in 1985, Kiki’s Delivery Service is a beloved children’s novel by Eiko Kadono, with illustrations by Akiko Hayashi. Hayao Miyazaki then turned it into a famous animated movie in 1989, which he both wrote and directed. The film also inspired an official art book and a comic book version.

Tales from Earthsea

Goro Miyazaki, son of the famous Hayao Miyazaki, directed the 2006 animated film Tales from Earthsea. The movie draws inspiration from both Ursula K. Le Guin’s Earthsea novels—specifically the first four books—and Hayao Miyazaki’s graphic novel Shuna’s Journey. Interestingly, the film’s title comes from the fifth book in the Earthsea series, but the movie doesn’t actually use any story elements from that particular book.
Shuna’s Journey originally came out in Japanese in 1983, and an English version was published in 2022. It features lovely watercolor illustrations by Hayao Miyazaki. We also suggest checking out The Books of Earthsea: The Complete Illustrated Edition, a beautiful, large-format hardcover that includes all of Ursula K. Le Guin’s Earthsea novels.

The Secret World of Arietty
I recently watched “The Secret World of Arrietty,” and it’s actually based on a book! It’s called “The Borrowers,” written way back in 1952 by Mary Norton. Studio Ghibli did an amazing job with the adaptation – Hayao Miyazaki himself wrote the script, and Hiromasa Yonebayashi directed it. It’s a really cool story if you haven’t checked it out!

The Cat Returns
Baron the Cat is a manga created by Aoi Hiiragi in 2002, and it was adapted into a film the same year as The Cat Returns. An English translation of the manga, titled Baron: The Cat Returns, came out in 2005. The character of Baron first appeared in the 1995 Studio Ghibli film Whisper of the Heart, as Aoi Hiiragi also wrote the original manga that film was based on. However, Hiiragi’s 1989 manga, Mimi o Sumaseba, has never been translated into English.

Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind

Hayao Miyazaki has only directly adapted one of his own creations: Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind. Originally published as a manga series in 1982, it’s his sole written work that he’s turned into a film. The 1984 movie is based on the first two volumes of the manga, which eventually grew into a seven-volume series completed in 1994. Because the manga continued for ten years after the film came out, the complete manga—over 1,100 pages long—differs significantly from the movie. Fans can find the Nausicaa manga in a standard paperback collection or a special two-volume hardcover box set that includes artwork and a poster. The Blu-ray/DVD combo of the film is also available in a steelbook edition, like many other Studio Ghibli movies.

My Neighbor Totoro

Unlike the previously mentioned stories, My Neighbor Totoro is a film and accompanying book series created by Hayao Miyazaki. The film came out in 1988, and a four-part manga version was released in Japan around the same time. Viz Media translated this manga into English between 2004 and 2005, and recently, in 2023, all four parts were combined into a single, nearly 600-page hardcover book for just $30. Also in 1988, the film was adapted into a picture book. To celebrate the film’s 25th anniversary, Tsugiko wrote a novel based on the story, featuring illustrations by Miyazaki.
