As a film enthusiast, I recently came across “Conclave,” a cinematic adaptation of Robert Harris’ 2016 novel by the same name. This captivating drama features an all-star cast including Ralph Fiennes, Stanley Tucci, John Lithgow, Sergio Castellito, and Isabella Rossellini. The narrative revolves around one of the world’s most enigmatic and historical events – the selection of a new Pope. After the sudden demise of the beloved Pontiff, Cardinal Lawrence (Fiennes) is entrusted with overseeing this secretive process. As the Church’s most influential leaders from across the globe convene within the sacred halls of the Vatican and are sealed off from the outside world, Lawrence unearths a series of shocking secrets left behind by the deceased Pope, secrets that could potentially rock the very foundations of the Church.

The film has unexpectedly become a success amidst a period where many adult dramas often fail to thrive. It garnered a grand total of 14 Oscar nominations across various categories such as Best Picture, Best Director (for Fiennes), Best Supporting Actress (Rossellini), Adapted Screenplay, Editing, and Original Score.

As a cinephile, I’ve been finding the theatrical market quite challenging for adult-oriented movies lately. However, it’s refreshing to witness a film like ‘Conclave’ successfully cut through the sequel and slasher din and establish itself as a notable presence in our cinemas.

Edward Berger, who won an Oscar for “All Quiet on the Western Front,” took charge of directing the film based on a script written by Peter Straughan.
