DreamWorks Needs to Reboot Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas in Live-Action
When it comes to exciting animated adventures, Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas is a standout. Released in 2003, the movie features Brad Pitt as the famous pirate Sinbad, who embarks on a thrilling quest with his crew to steal a powerful magical book called the Book of Peace.
Sinbad and his pirates intend to steal a valuable book, hoping to sell it back to the citizens of Syracuse—or whoever offers the most money. They plan to use the profits to retire on a tropical island, but their scheme fails when Sinbad’s ship is wrecked, and he’s pulled underwater.
Sinbad is rescued by Eris, the goddess of chaos, but she demands a task in return: delivering the Book of Peace to her to save his life. True to his cunning nature, Sinbad attempts to trick his way out of the agreement, which angers Eris and endangers both him and his crew.
This movie is about Sinbad and his crew as they battle the goddess Eris, all while running from the police in Syracuse – who are still upset about a previous theft. It’s a wild and unpredictable adventure across the seas, but ultimately a really fun ride.

As a movie fan, I’ve always known Sinbad the Sailor has been a popular figure on screen for decades, going all the way back to 1935! But honestly, the recent films really brought him back to life for a whole new audience – I think a lot of us younger moviegoers might not have known him otherwise. It’s great to see a classic character get a fresh introduction!

A successful remake builds upon the foundation of the original, staying faithful to what fans enjoyed while improving the experience with modern visuals and filmmaking techniques.
The remake truly shines in the “Test Drive” scene, where Hiccup and Toothless first take to the skies together. While this moment was already famous in the original film, the remake uses the possibilities of live-action to make it even more impressive.
Seeing the “Test Flight” sequence performed by real actors with the stunning scenery of Berk as a backdrop makes a particularly strong impression on audiences. This success suggests that when DreamWorks considers future live-action remakes, they should prioritize films that would similarly benefit from the transition.
While Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas is effective as an animated film, it feels like a story that would truly shine in live action. The film features impressive scenes with huge pirate ships and enormous sea creatures, visual effects that would have been challenging to create realistically with live action techniques back in 2003.
Today’s filmmaking technology allows for a truly faithful adaptation of stories like Sinbad. A remake could finally bring the original vision to life, delivering action and characters that are even more compelling than before.
Look, a good animated reboot can be amazing, but DreamWorks really needs to nail their next one. It’d be the easy route to just go with something everyone knows like Shrek or Kung Fu Panda, but honestly, I think they should dig a little deeper. Something like Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas feels like a missed opportunity – it had potential, but never quite hit its stride as an animated film, and I think a reboot could finally do it justice.
What We Know About How to Train Your Dragon 2
DreamWorks Animation has started making the sequel to How to Train Your Dragon. The new movie, How to Train Your Dragon 2, will continue the story five years after the original film, featuring Hiccup and Toothless discovering uncharted territories.
During their journey, they unexpectedly reunite with Hiccup’s mother, Valka, who everyone thought had perished. They also encounter Drago Bludvist, a ruthless warlord determined to create an enormous army of dragons.
As a longtime fan, I’m thrilled to report that Dean DeBlois, the creative force behind the original animated films and the recent live-action adaptation, is back at the helm for the next installment! Even better, the entire main cast is returning – Mason Thames will once again bring Hiccup to life, and we’ll see Gerard Butler as Stoick the Vast, along with Nico Parker as Astrid, Julian Dennison as Fishlegs, Gabriel Howell as Snotlout, Bronwyn James as Ruffnut, and Harry Trevaldwyn as Tuffnut. It’s fantastic to know these actors are all reprising their roles – it really feels like we’re continuing the journey with the same beloved characters.
The voice cast is growing with the addition of Cate Blanchett as Valka, Phil Dunster (known from Ted Lasso and Murder on the Orient Express) as dragon trapper Eret, and Ólafur Darri Ólafsson (from Severance and NOS4A2) as the warlord Drago Bludvist.
