It’s not only Disney that’s venturing into live-action remakes anymore. During the Super Bowl, Universal unveiled a sneak peek at their reimagining of DreamWorks Animation’s popular “How to Train Your Dragon”. Following a commercial break during the NFL championship game, they released an emotionally charged new trailer.
Similar to the movie released in 2010, this revamped version revolves around the island of Berk, a place where vikings and dragons have been mortal foes for centuries. However, Hiccup (Mason Thames) breaks with tradition by befriending Toothless, a dragon species known as Night Furies. This unexpected friendship sets off a chain reaction within the community, creating opportunities for both vikings and dragons to explore uncharted territories. The trailer showcases their first encounter, featuring cautious Hiccup tentatively touching Toothless’s snout, gradually gaining his trust over time.
“I’m the first viking who wouldn’t kill a dragon,” Hiccup says.
Consequently, his choice is honored. In unison, Toothless and Hiccup glide through the heavens, dashing past rugged cliffs and thundering seas, and ascending beyond intense conflicts as the melody intensifies.
The movie “How to Train Your Dragon” was directed by Dean DeBlois, who is also responsible for both directing and writing the initial three successful animated installments in the franchise. These films from DreamWorks were based on Cressida Cowell’s popular book series and together generated over $1.6 billion at global box offices, while receiving four Academy Award nominations.
The ensemble for the “How to Train Your Dragon” remake features Nico Parker as Astrid (from “The Last of Us”), Nick Frost playing blacksmith Gobber (known from “Shaun of the Dead”), Julian Dennison, Bronwyn James, Harry Trevaldwyn, Ruth Codd, Peter Serafinowicz, and Murray McArthur. Notably, Gerard Butler will once again voice the character of village leader Stoick, a role he originated in the animated series.
Apart from DeBlois revisiting the magical realm, the remake is also being produced by three-time Oscar nominee Marc Platt, known for “La La Land” and “Wicked.” Additionally, this movie was filmed using IMAX cameras.
Toothless and Hiccup will reunite on the big screen on June 13. Watch the trailer below.
