As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I can attest to the fact that Path of Exile 2 has taken ARPGs to a whole new level. The respec options in this game are simply phenomenal! They allow for an unprecedented amount of experimentation and tweaking, which is absolutely crucial when it comes to building the perfect character.
In Path of Exile 2, you can tinker with various character builds or fine-tune the one you already have using the respec (re-specialize) options. Here’s a rundown on how this system works.
Path of Exile 2 is now undergoing an expanded pre-release phase, giving gamers a chance to explore the game’s boundaries. These early testers have already helped the developers squash a bug that halted progress, but they prefer Grinding Gear Games to leave the challenge level untouched for the time being.
Even though Path of Exile 2 is yet to be fully released and presents a significant challenge, it’s managed to attract a notable number of players. If you’re among those giving it a go, here’s some information on how to adjust or modify your character build if needed.
This guide covers everything you need to know about Path of Exile 2’s respec mechanics including how to unlock the feature.

How to unlock respecs in Path of Exile 2
To customize your character in Path of Exile 2, first, make sure to unlock the relevant feature. This can be achieved by advancing the main storyline until you finish the “Mysterious Shade” quest and defeat the “Lachlann of Endless Lament” boss encounter.
In the Eternal’s Graveyard zone, you should finish up with this being your final task. Your character is likely to be around levels 7 to 12 at this stage. Head back to Clearfell Encampment and restore the health of the Hooded One to activate the respec feature.
How to respec Passives in Path of Exile 2
After the Hooded Figure has been fully recovered, they become a character you can engage with in Clearfell Encampment. Among their dialogue choices, there’s an option to reset your passive skills. Choosing this option leads you into the intimidating passive skill selection interface of the game.
You can hover over the nodes that you’ve invested in and either click or press the appropriate button on your controller to get back the passive points you used to unlock them. To return a passive, you’ll have to spend some Gold, and the amount needed depends on how deep into the passive tree the node you wish to refund is located.
To avoid potential financial loss, it’s wise to carefully examine the Passive Skill Tree before respeccing in Path of Exile 2, as respeccing can be quite expensive. If you’re not cautious, you might find yourself penniless.

Can you respec your Ascendancy Class in Path of Exile 2?
As an eager player diving headfirst into Path of Exile 2 during its early access phase, it’s essential to know that once you’ve completed your initial Ascendancy trial, you can’t change your Ascendancy Class. So choose wisely, as your decision is permanent!
You can however respec points spent in your Ascendancy tree and try out alternative options. It’s currently unknown whether you’ll be able to swap Ascendancy Classes in the full game.
Changing skills in Path of Exile 2
In contrast to other Action Role-Playing Games (ARPGs), particularly Diablo 4, the skills in Path of Exile 2 are not organized within a traditional skill tree. Instead, these abilities behave more like items that you can acquire and use independently.
As a gamer, I need to hunt down an Uncut Skill Stone and etch onto it a skill that suits my playstyle. The kind of ability I can carve depends on the rarity or level of the stone I’m using and the weapons I’ve got strapped to my back.
In the menu, you’re allowed to assign a maximum of nine skills. If you wish to change one, just go to the skills section and access your inventory. Once there, pick up the Skill Gem you desire for swapping, then move it onto the skill you intend to replace.
Once you’ve swapped a Skill Gem, it will be transferred to your inventory for safekeeping. If you no longer need certain Skill Gems, you can sell them. However, if you’re trying out a new skill and aren’t sure if you want to keep it, you can store unused Skill Gems in your Stash for later use instead of selling them.
