Traditional Japanese role-playing games usually tell a story that follows a set path, giving players limited control over how things unfold. To make up for this, they often feature exploration that’s highly worthwhile, encouraging players to actively search for hidden items and rewards.
The Dragon Quest series often includes extra things for players to find and collect. While it’s generally more straightforward than many other Japanese role-playing games, Dragon Quest games still have plenty of collectibles, like the well-known Mini Medals and hidden chests.
You’ll find quite a few locked chests during your journey, but you need specific keys to open them. A common issue in Dragon Quest VII Reimagined is that by the time you get those keys, you’ve probably forgotten where you even found the chests!
Don’t worry! This guide is here to help you find all the locked chests in Dragon Quest VII Reimagined. I’ll tell you exactly where each chest is hidden, and also show you where to find the keys you need to open them.
How to Open Locked Chests in Dragon Quest VII Reimagined

In Dragon Quest VII Reimagined, you need to find three special keys to open locked chests. First, you’ll get the Thief’s Key in Pilgrim’s Perdition, then the Magic Key in Palazzo di Bulgio, and finally the Ultimate Key in the Cathedral of Light.
Thief’s Key
You can get the Thief’s Key after completing the main story at Alltrades Abbey. Once you’ve saved the Abbey, travel to Pilgrim’s Perdition and go inside the house located to the north. The Thief’s Key is inside a chest there.
This key will unlock certain chests in the game. However, most chests will still be locked and require either the Magic Key or the Ultimate Key to open. It’s a little frustrating that the game doesn’t use different colors to show which key each chest needs, like in other games in the series.
Magic Key
You can get the Magic Key after you’ve unlocked the Flying Carpet. Once you’re flying around like Jasmine, go to the L’Arca Region and find the Palazzo di Bulgio, which is north of L’Arca village. Go inside the mansion and up to the top floor – you’ll find the Magic Key in a chest.
Ultimate Key
You’ll find the Ultimate Key near the very end of the game, inside the Cathedral of Light. The game’s story will lead you there automatically. Once inside, go up the stairs to the outer terrace, walk across the balcony to the west side, and then go down to the monster prison. The Ultimate Key is hidden in one of the chests in the northernmost cell.
Every Locked Chest Location
Here’s a breakdown of chests, grouped by the key needed to open them. You’ll likely need to revisit areas, but it’s definitely worth doing, particularly if you’re trying to collect all the Mini Medals – the rewards are excellent!
Thief’s Key Chests
#1 – Pilgrim’s Perdition (Past) | Mini Medal
Since you’re already here to get the key, open the chest to the southwest of the church.
There is another chest in the west house that remains locked until you get the Ultimate Key.
#2 – Pilgrim’s Rest (Past) | Seed of Resilience
Head to Pilgrim’s Rest in the Alltrades Abbey area and find the chest inside the single building there.
#3 – Pilchard Bay (Present) | Mini Medal
Head back to the present and travel to your hometown. Enter the item shop – you’ll find another Mini Medal inside.
#4 – Estard (Present) | Seed of Life & Seed of Magic
Okay, so I zoomed over to Estard and snuck into the item shop through the back entrance. Once inside, I headed straight for the counter and found two chests just sitting there – they both had different seeds in them, which is pretty cool!
#5 – Emberdale (Past) | Seed of Magic
Go back to the Emberdale Region, but travel to a time in the past. Once there, go to Palmela’s room and open the chest to find the seed.
Magic Key Chests
#1 – Palazzo di Bulgio (Present) | Mini Medal
Begin testing your Magic Key by going down one level within the Palazzo to unlock the chest you couldn’t open before.
#2 – Estard (Present) | Mini Medal
Zoom to Estard and enter the house to the west of Pike’s. Go to the second floor for another medal.
#3 – Dig Site (Present) | Mini Medal
Another medal for your collection, found inside the tent at the Dig Site.
Ultimate Key Chests & Doors
1 – Cathedral of Light (Present) | Mini Medal
This is your last chance to go back and fix any mistakes. After this, nothing will hold you back.
After grabbing the key, go to the south cell, open it, and break the urn.
#2 – Pilchard Bay (Present) | Mini Medal
Go to the only standard house in the village that’s not yours and open the chest downstairs.
After grabbing the key, go to the south cell, open it, and break the urn.
#3 – Estard Castle (Present) | Mini Medal & Seed of Strength
Use the raft to go around the moat. When you reach the other side, go to the dungeon. Once inside, open all the cell doors and smash the urns.
#4 – Estard Castle (Present) | Kingsblade, Pallium Regale, Platinum Shield & Mini Medal
Go to the Treasure Room – it’s upstairs, south of the dining room (you might have to turn the camera to find it). Inside, you’ll find the Kingsblade, the Pallium Regale, a Mini Medal, and a Platinum Shield, though the shield isn’t anything special.
#5 – Estard (Present) | Gold Fragment & Seed of Strength
Head to the Underground Path by taking the stairs in the village, then unlock the north cell. You’ll find the Gold Fragment on the floor, and the Seed of Strength is located somewhere in the main world.
#6 – Emberdale (Present) | Mini Medal
Found in a chest on the second floor of the Gaffer’s house.
#7 – Burnmont (Present) | Flame Sword, Mini Medal, Magma Staff & 1500 Gold
This dungeon contains four chests. You can get to them by continuously jumping down into the central crater until you reach Level 1, collecting them as you descend.
#8 – Al-Balad (Present) | Mini Medal
Inside the Mayor’s House (the northernmost one).
#9 – Aeolus Vale (Present) | Seed of Therapeusis & Seed of Agility
Found in two chests inside the armor shop.
#10 – Villa Priores (Present) | Agility Ring & Seed of Agility
There are two chests located inside the Praetor’s house. Also, the game seems to be teasing your group about being slow.
#11 – Hubble Castle (Present) | Mini Medal & Seed of Strength
Head to the Earth Tower and go down into the dungeons. Break open both jail cells, and then smash the urns inside. You’ll find a Mini Medal in one of them and a Seed of Strength in the other.

You can find additional seeds back at the old Hubble Castle, but it’s really not worth the effort.
#12 – Pool of the Cave (Present) | Dryspell Fan & Elfin Elixir
It’ll take some time, but you’ll eventually be able to access the Altar in the Cave Pool again. Inside, you’ll find two chests: one with a Dryspell Fan and the other with an Elfin Elixir.
If you noticed two chests at the Altar in the previous timeline, just so you know, they’re actually the same chest.
Later areas of the game, after you finish the main story, have more locked cells and chests that need the Ultimate Key. However, because you already need the key to even get to those areas, making a separate guide for them wouldn’t be helpful.
