Europa Universalis 5 blends elements from several Paradox games, resulting in a deeply complex experience – though many tasks can be automated. Players often struggle with core concepts like Antagonism and Casus Belli, and even basic features, such as raising armies (Levies), aren’t always easy to grasp. Therefore, it’s no surprise that a crucial action like moving your nation’s capital is also quite challenging.
Should you move capital in EU5?
Throughout history, many nations have relocated their capitals, usually to better reflect their expanding territory and improve strategic positioning. This concept also applies in EU5. Keeping your provinces close to the capital is vital for maintaining strong control over your country. However, if your capital is poorly located, achieving this can be difficult. While moving the capital can be a good solution, it comes at a significant cost.
How to move capital in UE5
Moving your capital city with Money and Stability will cost resources and take time – you can’t do it instantly. Any buildings that are specifically designed to function only within a capital city will be demolished in the process.
There is also a hidden cost. You need to “build” the new capital and to do that, you need:
- Paper
- Books
- Masonry
- Lumber
Early in the game, finding enough Books can be challenging. While you can purchase them from the market, that’s not a consistent solution. The most reliable way to get Books is by building your own Scriptoriums. However, establishing a stable supply isn’t simple. Also, remember to sell your Books in the correct market – some countries start with multiple markets within their borders, so choose wisely.
Once you’re ready, navigate to the Government tab, select your Country, and click the button in the top left corner. If you can’t select certain locations to move your capital, it means you don’t have enough resources available to begin the process.
Even if you have the funds to start, transferring those funds could be blocked if your target market unexpectedly loses access to them.
