Octopath Traveler II is a lengthy RPG that will take a significant amount of time to complete. As with most RPGs, battles are frequent, so leveling up your characters is crucial for success.
As you play, you’ll earn levels and face increasingly tough challenges. With so many characters to unlock, finding a reliable way to gain experience and level them all up is essential.
Here’s a guide to quickly gain levels in Octopath Traveler II, helping you prepare for tougher battles.
Rare Monsters Boost Experience

Octopath Traveler 0 hides some very rare monsters—called Caits and Octopuffs—that give a lot of experience points when defeated.
Caits are usually found on land in different spots, but Octopuffs stay in the sea. Both are tough to beat – you generally have to defeat them in a single turn, or they’ll escape.
Rare monsters give your party a lot of experience points when defeated – at least 1,000. Some particularly rare monsters can award 5,000 or even 7,000 points, which can help you level up quickly, even later in the game.
As a player, I’ve found that increasing how often monsters appear is a huge help! It lets you level up much quicker and earn a ton more cash. It’s a game-changer for progress, honestly!
Build the Training Grounds
While the town’s training grounds won’t improve your main team’s strength, it’s an important place to build if you want to keep your backup characters ready for action.
The training grounds are constructed as you progress through the ‘Rekindling the Flame’ questline, which involves restoring the town of Wishvale. After building it, you can assign some of your reserve party members to train there.
Party members who are on the training grounds will gain experience from battles your main team fights, helping them stay at a good level.
Experience Boosting Items and Abilities
In addition to other strategies, it’s always helpful to equip your characters with items and abilities that increase experience gains. For example, the Brooch of Joy, which you get from Princess Mary, lets your party earn extra EXP and JP.
You can find the EXP Augmentor, an item that helps you level up faster, in a blue chest located in Shepherd’s Rock Pass. It’s available relatively early in the game.
Besides items, some skills boost the experience you earn in battles. The Extra Experience Mastery skill increases experience gain, but it doesn’t stack – having multiple characters with this skill won’t give you a bigger boost.
Two Scholars Strategy
I’ve found a great way to beat enemies fast and level up quickly. I suggest heading to Theatropolis and recruiting Alexia the Scholar.
Next, select the Scholar class for your character. Having both a Scholar and a magic-user on your team usually provides enough magical power to easily defeat enemies, helping you gain experience and level up faster.
Gaining experience is easy if you farm enemies a little stronger than you with two Scholars. It’s also a good idea to have two healers on your team to keep the Scholars healthy if they take damage.
