How to increase settlement loyalty in Bannerlord War Sails

The first expansion for Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord, called War Sails, introduces Vikings (Nords) alongside the existing Strugian faction. Along with the new content, a significant patch (version 1.3) is also being released, bringing changes to the base game. This update has altered the settlement loyalty system, removing the previously popular method of using Festivals and Games to manage discontent. This article explains how to address settlement loyalty issues in the new version.

How to avoid decreasing settlement loyalty in Bannerlord War Sails?

How happy the people in your cities and castles are – their loyalty – is crucial for keeping things running smoothly. High loyalty means more benefits and prosperity, while low loyalty can cause problems like unhappiness, people leaving, reduced income, and slower building. If loyalty drops too low, your settlement might rebel and break away from your control.

Previously, players managed city happiness using automatic events called Daily Defaults, one of which was Festival and Games. However, the recent update removed this feature, making it harder to keep cities under control. This is particularly challenging in settlements with a different culture than your own, or if the city’s governor isn’t from that culture.

Fortunately, there are several useful tips that will help you overcome this problem.

  1. If one of the mistakes that players make is hiring a governor from a culture other than that of a settlement, then hiring one who has the same background will help.
  2. It is also worth to use Kingdom Policies, which will significantly facilitate loyalty management.
  3. Your companions have various perks. Some of them boost loyalty in a settlement.
  4. As a last resort, you can also build a huge garrison, because high security supports gaining loyalty. The problem is that this is an expensive solution that requires a lot of resources.
