2023’s sensation Mia McKenna-Bruce, who recently won the BAFTA Rising Star award for her role in “How to Have Sex,” will be taking on a significant new role in an upcoming production.
In the upcoming film “The Cry of the Guard” (“Le Cri Des Gardes”), directed by renowned French filmmaker Claire Denis, British actor will share screen time with Matt Dillon and Isaach de Bankolé. Notably, he replaces Riley Keough in a principal role.
The movie is being created by French production companies Curiosa Films and Vixens, along with Astou Production in Senegal, and receives support from Arte France Cinema. It’s based on the play “Black Battles With Dogs” written by Bernard-Marie Koltes. Denis, Suzanne Lindon, and Andrew Litvack are responsible for the screenplay.
One evening, I find myself standing before an expansive construction site in Senegal, where a band of laborers are faced with a man whose sibling perished on these grounds in a work accident. This movie serves as the next masterpiece from Denis, following her triumph at Berlin with “Both Sides Of The Blade” and her victory at Cannes with “Stars at Noon.
After Molly Manning Walker’s “How to Have Sex” won the Un Certain Regard competition at Cannes 2023 and was distributed by Mubi, McKenna-Bruce received the best lead performance award at the British Independent Film Awards and the breakthrough performer of the year title at the London Film Critics’ Circle Awards. Subsequently, she became part of the cast for the queer drama film “Sister Wives” and secured the lead role in Netflix’s upcoming Agatha Christie series “The Seven Dial Mystery.” This series is written by Chris Chibnall, a former “Doctor Who” showrunner, and also features Helena Bonham Carter, Martin Freeman, and Edward Bluemel. Filming took place over the summer.
